No, read the above carefully, you FTP the picons to the HDD from the laptop. Ifyou have not used FTP before you need to download filezilla and have a play, its free, basically you use the ip address of your tiviar and the passwords root and tempass. It will all become clear.

    https://www.ext2fsd.com/

Or use that^^, initialise the usb on the box, plug it into laptop, drag/drop, put back in box.

    Hi folks,

Got my box set up remotely in the attic.
I am using HDMI Cec/Arc from my TV which is downstairs to control the box.

Has anyone set up HDMi/Cec with these boxes?
Mines working well except for 1 problem, I can't load up the EPG from my TV remote.
When I press The Guide button on my TV remote the TV switches over to it's built in guide for saorview. Does anyone know how to load up the EPG thru HDMI Cec?

My TV is a Sony Bravia android.

    Thx in advance.

I have the iplayer and others on the humax box and it is a great asset, better than netflix and very user friendly.

I'd love to have a solution like the tiviar but the ability to stream stuff anywhere I am located and be able to download stuff to a mediashare device that could be used wirelessly offline.

I have young kids and often have to do long journeys in the car and it would be great to have tv downloads that they could access without internet in the car and away from home.

I know the iplayer and netflix allow downloads but they expire after a certain time which is a pain, as you can't renew unless connected to the internet.

I see youtube premium allows you to download stuff. I wonder is there an expiry with the content and what is the user experience like?

If you have an iPad there is an app called Blackbox that I use to download recordings from my E2 STB HDD. Then I can watch them while traveling. I think there is a mention of this app somewhere in these forums, perhaps the foreign satellite section. Can’t remember where but I am sure somebody here will remember it. You can also use it to watch live tv using available tuners.

I have installed the Picons on the HDD, i can see them as .png files and I have done the following: Menu>Setup>EPG>Graphical Infobar EPG Settings>Service Title Mode> Picon and Service Name. Restarted to box and no Picons?

The folder on the hard drive needs to be called picon not picons ;)

    Hi.

after getting fed up with cheapo sat receivers I'm considering going for the TIVIAR ALPHA+ PLUS.

Is WOS the best place to purchase? Currently £99stg + delivery

    Sub-Total: £82.50
DPD Republic of Ireland 2 working days - Order before 3pm: £10.49
    UK VAT: £18.60
    Total: £111.59

I see they are also selling on ebay @ £109.00 + I can do delivery £5.99 to the north + parcel motel or £17.44 direct.

Have most people bought direct from the site?

Also, is it worth getting them to add a 1TB HD for £60?
I can buy drives cheaper online & install myself .. is there much involved?
I've swapped drives in a sky+ box previously - I can't imagine it would be much different?

Wifi not needed as I already have a spare powerline adapter I can use

Finally, OpenVix or OpenATV ? Although I'll prob end up flashing the image from earlier in this thread

I bought a 500GB laptop HD on Ebay for £15, opened up the Tiviar myself, stuck it in and formatted it, works perfectly. I downloaded and mounted THHB's image, manually set up Saorview, stuck the picons folder on the HD using Filezilla and box is running sweetly.

It cost me E127 delivered from WOS. That may vary a little depending on the exchange rate. Took less than a week. As above it's handy enough to fit a HDD yourself if you can get one cheaper.

    Hi,

I've installed the high horse brigade image, have everything functioning except I attempted to update the bouquets with autobouquetsmaker today and it wouldn't work.

I changed the region to Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland and tried to perform a scan but I get a message saying "autobouquetsreader not found!" I then changed it back to NI and the issue still persists, any ideas?

I've no idea, just flash the image again

Try another Freesat region. I just did a scan on mine using Freesat NI and it worked fine

well one week later, still on the learning curve and still loving the box. Its a great piece of kit and so far my viewing experience has been very positive and the timers (and ease) for recordings are also a real bonus.
    all good so far.

Am getting all the info I need from this forum ,and many thanks for all the input.

Here's a question. How do I access or download a radio app like "Tune in " or anything similar for radio ? that can be easily accessed.

is it easy for a computer novice like myself ?

    Thanks :)

I’m taking it that you know that you can receive a number of Irish an Uk channels directly on the box. There is a tv/radio button on the remote.

You can install new plugins from menu plugins. There is one called TuneIn Radio which is supposed to be good. It’s hard to say how easy it is for a novice. Some plugins work without any effort, others can take configuration.

Is it worth getting the WIFI option on WOS, what is the advantage or functions with that?

If you connect the box to your WiFi you can stream live TV and recordings to laptops phones and tablets

I got the 300MB/s dongle from WOS, and it was a disaster. The connection to the router dropped anytime I tried to stream from the box, or even when configuring it. I kept having to go in to setup, to restart the network.

There is another dongle recommended in this topic, maybe even in this thread, that appears to work better.

    Yes 2.5 inch Sata

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭thund3rbird_

Box ordered last night & has been dispatched. should have it thursday
Picked up a 2.5 SATA locally for it for €20 :)

I didnt opt to add wifi when buying but reading STB's post I have found some cheap wifi adapters with the Ralink RT5370 chipset on ebay - got one antenna one and one of the small ones (got both for under a fiver total)

Looks like I have a busy weekend ahead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 574 ✭✭✭PacMan

I am real impressed with the box, and I hope you will too.

Still a rather steep learning curve for me with trying to sort out picon's etc, but am on the way to getting there with limited time during a busy day.

Its really great and again a big thanks to all on here for the help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,694 ✭✭✭Payton

It's definitely a learning curve and there is so much on the box with differant menus etc it is a brilliant peice of kit. I have mine a week and I love it and still tweaking it slightly each evening. My next task if its possible is to remove the channel numbers from the channels as I scroll up and down e.g. xxxx BBC1

@ PacMan and Payton remember the golden rule of computing, make backups of your settings as you "play" with things. Use the BLUE button. It only takes a few seconds and can save many hours of swearing.
Backups, both full and settings only, are stored on the HDD by date stamp. If you use the basic restore function, it will use the latest backup. However, with a little more work you can opt to roll back to any other stored date/time.

Can I ask a question here re the external hard drive being used through usb.

Are there limitations on the amount of recordings that can be done due to the bit rate over usb?

Yes, an internal sata drive is much faster. Sata can max at 3Gb/s where as usb 2.0 can only do 480 mb/s

Going to be an issue for the Saorview Connect box.
