Correlation between 5K ,10K, HM and Marathon times

I've run approximately 250 races to date and can name exactly 3 where I think I got the optimum out of myself, when I managed to pace it well and arrived at the finish line just about at the point of collapse. In shorter races I just don't seem to have the desire to push myself to the limit; in longer races the difference between just right and too fast is so fine it's very hard to get it right.

This was more the point I was making rather than the times of races click. The training specific aspect is not just about pace it is also about pain management.

It bloody well is not. I'll post that one later. Twice dipping under 1.20 m8 on that one. (It's short as well as downhill!!) The second time I ran it, I went out too fast and died towards the end - last 8k or so :O As I was approaching the finishing chute, about 4 foot wide, I see a couple finishing the 10k hand in hand. I knew if I didn't pass 'em before the finishing chute the sub 80 was gone. Had to flippin' sprint for 50 metres to beat 'em to the narrow finish. Of course the crowd, such as it was, was cheering the happy couple and couldn't give a toss about my epic effort. There's no justice in this running gig.

You should avoid posting when 'under the influence'. Just noticed I used the words 'finishing' and 'chute' about 6 times each there.

I haven't included 5 miles because my PB is from years ago. I ran a faster 10k during the 10 mile PB. 10 mile and 10k times are from this year, the rest are from last year.

10k, Half and Marathon times are all this year, 5k and 10 mile date back to 2016. Big drop off in marathon time compared to other times but I know i’m no endurance freak, it’s a distance I will have to work on.

Now that I've emerged from a dark age do any new pbs that are not beating "old" pbs count as new age pbs or what? Hard to motivate oneself if looking back on times you did in a different life!

Plenty of life in you yet, be patient, can’t see any reason why you won’t beat those times.

I know guys who started collecting "M40 PBs" and then "M50 PBs" and so on, so that they would not have to compare themselves to a much faster younger version of themselves.

I can't bring myself to do that, it feels like cheating. But there came the point at some stage when I had to admit to myself that my last PB had been set several years ago and that I was rather unlikely to ever set a new one.

yeah, but you have spent a few years splashing about and getting lost on hills. A bit of real training should see you beat all those times

It's an interesting one, I know that I now consciously race for the M40 prize in the IMRA runs as the actual overall win is usually just that little bit away from me. And by that I mean unless I am in the top 3 I don't really care* if I come 4th, 5th or 6th as long as the other M40 lad is behind me.

With that mindset it's only a small step to having M40 PB's and then in your late 40's even "this years" PB's as you eagerly await that 50th year to roll around..

*I do care but I will definitely try harder if a fellow ould lad passes

This is what I like about this Forum. You are never the only one. M40 PBs they are unless the are Real PBs Then I can double celebrate the fact that A) I got a real PB and

My 40 year old self beat my 30 year old self!

They are all from a few years ago now, and I'm dubious about the timing system used for the 10km. Not sure I can get near any of them at the moment as I just don't have the speed any more, the marathon I do plan on nibbling away a bit more of though if all goes to plan in April next year.
