Any point in jump starting it?

It’s the alternator or bad battery Rigjt ?

I can drop him home or try a jump which I think is pointless

Being the time of year where battery comes under pressure from less daylight and falling temperatures, my guess new battery needed. If he currently does regular long drives and battery is less than 2 years old I'd look at alternator.

It's hardly that time yet surely?

I go for something in the charging circuit or else something consuming the battery.

Under pressure from less daylight? Should he drive with bonnet open to give battery some day light?

By pressure I mean useage, eg heat on, lights on, rear window heater on, heated mirrors on etc.
