lime and 10 10 20

just wondering,my silage ground could do with lime,would i see much improvement if i spread two ton to the acre now,would my silage yield and quality improve much and would it help me to cut earlier? also i was thinking of spreading a bag of 10 10 20 to the acre also

Did you do a soil test to see if it needed lime? Chances are it does need lime, with all the rainfall we get, but a soil sample would give you the information to see how much you need to spread over a few years or maybe none at all.

It would also show how you're doing with P&K as well and tell you how much you need to spread every year to bring your levels up to index 3 and the correct pH for your field which will allow you to grow more grass for the levels of fert you normally use.

On the soil testing.
If you're a soil testing virgin it can seem like gobbledy gook and daunting if you've never had it done before.
However if you're a member of teagasc you can get it done through them or usually the ag merchant you're dealing with it's bread and butter for them. And don't worry about going out with a sampler, all these places have minions that will come to your farm to do it for you.

SR2 test would be enough. Will tell you the PH and P&K levels in the soil.

Will this crowd tell you how much say 10.10.20 you need to put out per acre and say 1 ton of lime to the acre or is it just a load of numbers that you would need to know what your looking at???

They will give tonnes of lime needed alright but will give an index number for P&K only. The levels used then will depend on stocking rate and allowances for the nitrates regulations so not so easily figured out.

They will tell you your levels of p and k and lime needed and you can pick the type of fertiliser to suit the needs then.
