Huge Weekend On The Roads- Half Marathon And Marathon World Records Under Siege

    May be the greatest assembly of long distance runners ever in one weekend in the Copenhagan Half on Saturday and Berlin on Sunday.

    Copenhagan has 17 guys with PB's of sub-60 minus Rupp who has withdrawn. Erick Kiptanui saying he is attacking Zernesey Tadesse's 58:23 World Record. field is so stacked that even targeting a pace like that, he might have 10 more go out with him at World record pace so expect carnage in this one. Add to that, two of Debutants are 6th fastest 5000m man Yomif Kejelcha fresh off his 12:46 in Brussels 2 weeks ago and 26:54 man William Sitonik and this is one of the greatest assembly's of distance runners at one ever. Paul Pollock is also in for Irish Interest so should be interesting to see how he is performing after the Euros.

    Women's field is also loaded with talent with the second fastest woman in history Joan Melly and recent Womens only race World Record holder Mary Wacera and also contains 14:22 5k and 3:56 1500m woman Sifan Hassan making her debut although she probably won't be competitive in this field at this distance yet. Jordan Hasay has withdrawn.

    Then Berlin is on Sunday with Kipchoge's agent saying he is attacking the World Record and looking for 61 low pace through halfway. The mens field is pretty weak compared to recent years but does have the 4th fastest marathoner ever Wilson Kipsang although he has been hit and miss over the last while.

    The women's field is a lot stronger than usual even if many are in the twilight of their career with some big hitters and 5 women who have run sub-2:20. 3rd fastest woman in history and arguably the greatest female distance runner in history, Tirunesh Dibaba heads the field against defending champ Gladys Cherono and marathon legend Edna Kiplagat and 3 time Dubai winner Aselefech Mergia. Hard to see past Dibaba in this one.

    No tv coverage but there will be streams, will post em up when closer to the days when I find good quality working streams.

    Kipkemoi wins the half in 59:04 but what a debut Sifan hassan in the womens race. 65:13 which must be a top 5 all-time performance. A woman with a 1:56 800m best running that time is an incredivle range.

    Sifan Hassan breaks the European record in Copenhagen half marathon with 1:05:14 (from 1:06:25 by Lornah Kiplagat). Her first half marathon.

    From LRC:
    "There are four women in the field who have run under 67 minutes for the half marathon. The other big name in the field is Sifan Hassan of the Nike Oregon Project, who is one of the best 1500/5000 meter runners on the planet, and is taking her first crack at a world class half marathon."

    Hassan went through 10k in 30:37, and is apparently moving up to the 10k next year. Will be fascinating to see what she could do.

    I've just started watching the Half on Youtube. The whole race. The pace at the beginning is unreal. They cut away to the Happy Joggers for a minute and when they came back to the elites I thought they were going at a suicidal speed. Then I realised it was the lads around the leading female.
    Jaysus. 
    Off now to watch the rest of it.

    Wow. Hassan, that is one awkward stride and gets worse of course as she tires/speeds up.
