That's good - presumably just the UK rights though? It's kind of odd how it's just Ireland's games.

ROI rights were to previously sold to RTE. These games are not part of any competition, so IRFU has freedom to sell their own home games.

RTE already have the Irish rights to the November games until 2021. http://www.irishrugby.ie/ireland/41000.php#.W4_UtKJEBzk

Remember that over 70% of viewers in N.Ireland can watch RTE on Saorview so this is not really important for them but for those who did not subscribe to Sky Sports and cannot get Saorview it is good news.

Rugby outside of the SH is pretty much dead on Sky now.

Although they still have England games, summer tests and the Top 14 to enable MJohnston to watch Paddy Jackson playing for Perpignan 😆

Not forgetting the Irish people living in England, Scotland and Wales and rugby fans in general.

I saw the last 15 minutes of The Backrow on eir sport with Murray Kinsella, Cian Tracey and Brendan Fanning. They discussed Conor Murray's injury and the lack of info on it, the backup at 9 and possible bolters for the world cup - Doris and Kleyn.

It is a shame that eir don't have a catch up service for these programmes. I am half tempted to get eir vision so I can record the programmes.

Are tv3 and tg4 in HD on it I wonder?

Sorry if I've missed it in the 33 pages of the thread so far. Quick question- if I switch to Eir Broadband to avail of the "Eir Sports Pack", I understand I will be able to watch these channels on a PC browser, but will I only be able to watch them live i.e. can you pause, record or catch-up?

As far as I know, you can't.
If you have no other tv supplier the eir broadband and tv could be an option.

There is currently no catchup on the eir app and I doubt it will happen considering they have a tv service to flog as well.

I am tempted by eir tv as having tv3 and tg4 in hd would be a big plus. I have saorview at the moment.

On your broswer I am not sure.

BUT - If you have a sky box even if the subscription is inactive, you can ask Eir to activate the channels on your viewing card. Which might allow you to pause, rewind etc.

No, pause & rewind are Sky Plus features which require an active subscription.

Cool, I did say "might", thanks for clearing it up.

I saw the highlights show The Pro14 Hour with presenters Connor Morris and Murray Kinsella and guests were Eddie O'Sullivan and Jim Hamilton. A nice show with short highlights of games and good discussion. A show like this was hugely needed.

There was another half-hour show called The Back Row with Kinsella, Cian Tracey and Fanning. They got into more macro issues with Irish rugby as well as some highlights.

Ya I saw the 2nd half of that. It seems the Pro14 Hour show is also simulcast for Premier Sports.

I don't know about the Back Row show.

For the rugby fan they are definitely a plus. Even if you don't see them first they seem to be repeated again.

Just watched the Pro 14 hour...good show. Something the league has needed for a long time.

    Jim Hamilton is good.

What would people recommend is the best value option for someone in the USA, who is free to... eh... "move"... wherever they wish in the world, and watch rugby on a computer/laptop:

Go the Eir route, best way seems to be: buy the cheapest Eir Broadband sub (30Eur p/m), "move" to the ROI, watch online.
Go the Premier Sports route - is there an online version available that one could then watch online after "moving" to the UK?
RugbyPass route - "move" to Hong Kong and watch online.

Premier Player. Has both channels and 7 days on demand.

    RugbyPass, or perhaps just ESPN?

I don't know how Eir would let you take out a broadband subscription without an address. PremierSports seems grand, but the RugbyPass subscription gives you so much more rugby too. The RugbyPass app is absolutely excellent too, for what it's worth.

Just to put in context what can be accessed via RugbyPass, I am able to view, in full, every Pro14 game that they had rights to, all the way back to the start of the 2016 season. Presumably the same is true for the other competitions they have rights for too, but I haven't checked. This year is the first year they've picked up the rights to all the Pro14 games (at least for the first couple of rounds), so in previous seasons it's more scattered games, but that level of archived content must be pretty unprecedented?

Now, not only does this infinite archive contain the games in full, but also a "condensed" version, which is basically game highlights. The condensed version seems to be automatically created somehow (perhaps using the timestamps of scores, penalties, etc.) and has some rough edits in terms of the commentary. But like, I'm already able to watch a highlights version (about 12 minutes long) of the Ulster game from earlier, which is fantastic.

When you start watching while a game is still on, you're able to drop in live, or you can choose to watch from the start.

Then I'll just mention the full list of tournaments again: "Every game from The Six Nations, The Rugby Championship, June & November Internationals, Super Rugby, European Champions Cup, Premiership Rugby, Mitre10 Cup, and Currie Cup, plus selected matches from the Pro14" (that text about the Pro14 hasn't been updated since last year, they're currently showing every game).

There's an iOS and Android app, but there's also a great and simple HTML5 web player, and it supports Chromecast and AirPlay. Picture quality is excellent, and the streaming technology they're using is stable and very good at shifting quality up and down if your bandwidth dips for a wee bit. Honestly the only negative about the service that I can think of is that they haven't confirmed what their full season schedule of Pro14 games will be.

Just a massive shame that there's no chance of a similar service being properly available in Ireland.

Thanks for this, very compelling case indeed!

How stingey are they with simultaneous logins?

Rugbypass does sound great but the only thing that puts me off is it doesn't show all Pro14 games.

Just looking at RugbyPass now..does it say $0.99 a month? I could have sworn it was around $10 a month last week.

It does at the minute anyway. That might change in later rounds but that's why it's handy that the subscriptions have no minimum term, so I can just cancel next month if they change.

Think that's just the price for an Irish subscription - which only gives you access to their rugby documentaries and original shows.

You have to be in one of the supported countries (say India) when you sign up, although you can still use an Irish PayPal account to sign up.

Do my eyes deceive me? What's the catch?

I happen to in..um.. Hong Kong this weekend so $1 for a month of rugby sounds pretty good.

    That would makes more sense.

After seeing this, I rushed there and signed up as quick as possible in case it was some sort of mistake and they were going to cancel it. Then took a quick flight to Singapore to watch a match and realised that it must just be a subscription for their content and not the matches :(

They've had every game for the first three rounds so far. This is certainly a change from last season.

    :(

If you're in Singapore then it will probably show you the actual pricing for the matches now. If not, clear cache and cookies. I think it was $8 for a weekly pass, $20 for a monthly pass and $160 for an annual pass.

If you're in the UK then Premier Sports seem to be doing first month free for their online player. It has all Pro14 matches live and gives you 7 days of catchup on the standard subscription. £10 a month after that. You get the apps and full season catchup for £12 a month. No Champions Cup though.

If you're in Ireland, Eir broadband seems to be best way to go. I've been thinking of switching from Virgin Media. When I get home, that is.
