Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

heat pump and solar panels

    I'm looking for advice about heat pump and solar panels. We were initially advised that we only needed a heat pump to heat a 260 sq mtr house. We have been told today that we need to have solar panels as well. The reason is due the provision of 4kWh/m2/Annum will require PV as the well as a heat pump since the heat pump alone will not meet the legal requirements of the building regulations under part L. Can anyone advise if there is an alternative to consider.

    Solar PV does not work to heat your house in Ireland. I have no idea about the regulations under part L, they might say you'll be grand. But you won't.

    This is quite a common problem. Your house is so well insulated that the heat pump isn't running enough to make your renewables component. Funnily enough, if you downgraded your double glazing, your heat pump might run enough to meet the renewables.

    Not that I would recommend that...

    Your BER assessor can work out how many panels you need. Usually 2 or 3 does the trick, but since extra panels are so cheap, you might put in a larger system to produce usable amounts of power and/or get your hot water from it in summer.

    The alternative is fossil fuel, oil or gas and solar PV alone. If your house is exceptionally well insulated, your heating bills won't be all that high either way
