We are the same as vast majority of other countries in the world. School rarely prepares you for work, but for some reason most seem to get jobs ok and make a living, so it all seems to work out long term.

Are you just gov bashing again? Our education system is as good as many.

Another homeless family raising their profile , The McDonaghs, on the 9 o clock news tonight. They only have three kids.

Tried to google this and didn't find anything, tuning in to RTE1+1 to catch it.

I did however find this family of 8 (https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/i-can-t-take-this-another-night-sitting-in-a-car-with-six-kids-1.2811066) who were homeless a couple of years ago. A few parallels with Margaret Cash's situation although in fairness it does mention that the father/husband works at least.

Also found a story on this nice father of 6 (https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/courts/fatherofsix-admits-using-two-false-names-to-steal-over-44000-through-social-welfare-fraud-30685164.html) abusing the welfare system. I'm sure his children - like Maggie's - will grow up to be good, honest hardworking, tax paying citizens.

Edit: Just found this also. Father of 7 with 42 convictions getting €903 per week in benefits: https://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/convicted-man-gets-euro903-welfare-a-week-court-hears-313123.html

There was a Traveller representative addressing the pope in Croker at the weekend. Her jist was "it's all about education...please pray that someone will help with Traveller education."

It's there missus, it's called School and making them go and encouraging them is called parenting.

She was calling for equality in housing too.

The CSO have some interesting stats on Travellers. 48% live in council or voluntary housing. Only 20% own (or have mortgages on) their own house. If there was equality with the rest of the population we'd have around 2.5 million people living in council houses.

I'm more a societal critic not just poltical one, our educational system fails to meet the needs of most citizens, many struggling with the most essential life skills post education

Jesus, if they weren't we'd be in trouble. They're the ones in Intel, Microsoft, Guinness and Ryanair keeping the country afloat with their taxes.

Surely the country would be a basket case if this was fact?

On what bases is it what you say?*

*I'm not saying it's perfect but I don't think it is what you think it is. I'm a father of a teenager heading into inter cert year and so far I've only been impressed by the standard of schooling so far.

That one in particular is unreal. Owns two houses and is getting €900 a week in welfare.

There's 29 children in total between the 3 links I posted, Maggie's litter, and the 3 McDonagh kids from the news tonight. I suspect that most of them will be living off welfare and/or frequenting prison cells down the line. Depressing stuff.

A lot more complicated than just education, but it is a part of it

Ingrained criminality is another part of it, as is domestic violence.

A lot of travellers are getting disability payments which is a way around being made work.

The majority of these would have some form of intellectual disability.

This thread isnt really about people on disability allowance. It has its abusers no doubt but thats a very small minority.

As said by me and many posters. Cap child benefit payable only to the first child. Lone parent paid until the first child is 4 years of age again limited to the first child. Mandatory declarations of fathers of these children for the state to recoup maintenance. Like in the USA non payment of support = welfare restrictions, driving bans, withdrawal of state services.
    Back to school allowance abolished

Materials, uniforms etc provided by schools via payment from the DSP.

Mandatory drug testing and searches of council housing of those suspected of any involvement in drugs and sanction of welfare for conviction of any criminal activity.

Vandalism/ASB by children to hit the pockets of their parents. Parents benefits linked to school attendance.

    From the above
Judge Reilly said: “He and his family are being supported by the State. His alcohol abuse is significant. The amount of no-insurance convictions shows a blatant disregard for the law.”
So as well as costing the state, he also drives around without insurance? How has he not gotten any prison time yet? Actual prison time, and not just suspended sentences.

While driving around without insurance is a problem in general, it is an even bigger issue with people like that individual.

The sad thing is they are getting away with it, without being caught that is, a lot of the time.

Is it one rule for us and another for them??

    Why am I law abiding?

Effectively yes it is, not legally, but because this is an ‘entitlement culture’

I know someone who openly admits to doing it, doesn’t have as much as a dog licence, never worked etc, the attitude is that the M.I.B.I will pick up his tab if anything happens and the odds of them getting the money from someone who never work nor is ever likely to see virtually nil.

Yes I did report them and it wasn’t followed up.

Country is awash with spongers and proper scum.

It’s exploded in the last 20 years.

    It’s not gonna end well.

I'll be the first to admit that it's not great, but if you don't goto class and learn and do the exams, it's your own fault for failing due to not showing up.

What sort of "life skills" are you talking about?

I feel sorry for the do gooders that fight for these spongers, says a lot about a person and their judgement if that’s who they lie with.

Rod: Daddy, what do taxes pay for? -
Flanders: Why, everything! Policemen, trees, sunshine- and let's not forget the Margret Cash types who just don't feel like working, God bless 'em.

Someone from the Simon Community on the radio just said
It's not fair that people have nowhere to go if they can't afford to rent

What percentage of the population really really can't afford to rent?
What percentage of the population really really have nowhere to go if they can't afford to rent and don't own their own place?
Actually, I'd love to see actual figures on that. You see the likes of Cash who want a house near their mother but their mother would rather see them "homeless" than put them up while they find alternative accommodation.

Her mother has passed away recently i think and she wants a house near her grave not her house.

So, a nonsense reason. A roof over your head should come first.

There's nothing nonsense about that, it relates to our emotional connections as human beings, it cannot be rationalised

So she'd rather be whinging in the media about being "homeless" because she won't accept accommodation not within a certain radius of her mother's grave? She should be thinking of her children and what is in their best interests and that is, getting settled somewhere before school starts again.

Let her rationalise it with her own earnings from work not from welfare
