Not sure it's been mentioned but Virgin Media in NI (and presumably the rest of the UK) have Premier Sports as part of their standard packages (I'm on their minimum TV package and I've got it!).

I'd resigned myself to having to watch most of the season on crappy streams till i realised that! Happy out now :D

It's only free for two months it was added to our VM package as a retention sweetener when the U.K. tv channels left vm in July

Note that Connacht vs Glasgow is simulcast live on both Eir Sport channels on Saturday. Tea time kos see first live split with Munster match on 1 and Ulster match on 2. Obviously reverse situation for Premier Sports which means that any viewers in N. Ireland who want to see Munster game live in HD should watch match on Eir Sports 1 rather than Premier Sports 2.

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/aug/28/premiership-rugby-clubs-join-forces

Clubs in England coming together to sort out their financial losses - with no note on how to sort it.

You do wonder if the home nations should come together and form their own league.

So Eir are not showing Ospreys vs Edinburgh live on Friday night, instead Cardiff vs Leinster is live on both ES1 and ES2. Ospreys vs Edinburgh is deferred. I thought the idea was that all Pro14 games would be shown live?

The eir sports app shows that same game on eir1 and eir2.

    Nope, as discussed earlier.

EIR are showing all the games but not all are shown live

The more I think about this the more VPN, Rugbypass and Premier sports subscriptions make sense...

    Contradicting messages from day one:

    http://www.eirsport.ie/eir-sport-announce-exciting-innovative-guinness-pro14-three-year-deal

The headline does say every game live. Even then though, the devil of the detail says “up to six games each week live” which given that there are seven games each week there was always going to be one not live.

Add to this as I say is that eir Sport have two channels, Premier have three. And the complicating factor - eir Sport 2 and Premier Sports 1 are in fact the same channel, and the only HD channel of Premier Sports.

    Anyway.....

Last of the Premier Sports pundits announced, the Scottish crew:

    https://www.pro14rugby.org/2018/08/28/giants-of-scottish-rugby-complete-premier-sports-team/

Also it seems you’ll have a choice of crew on Friday night, eir Sport crew on eir Sport 1 and Premier Sports’ Welsh crew on eir Sport 2.

Just wondering have you investigated this option yet?

I am waiting until games actually start.
Hopefully some NI based poster (or Welsh) might have signed up for the Premier Sports App and will give a review of its quality etc.

So far, I think most NI based viewers are saying they will be viewing Premier Sports as part of their TV package!

I have used a paid VPN before and have had absolutely no issues with them (for the love of god don't use a free one) The better ones are about €10 if you pay monthly or sign up for the year for €70-80

It is important to get a paid for one as it wont throttle your speed (as much) Virgin gives me 100mbps, you need a lot of this to stream live sports in decent quality.

I signed up for Premier Sports for a month and it seemed to be fine streaming some random Nascar stuff at the time. Sound sync was about 1 second off which is annoying watching someone talk, but in the context of watching a match, it should be fine.

    I haven't tried Rugbypass yet

Ive switched from Virgin Media TV and 50mb broadband (60pm) to Eir 50mb Broadband and TV (55pm). All very seemless and just in time for KO off this weekend. Happy out.

I toyed with the idea of just getting the broadband (40pm) and using the Eir Sports app but wanted to be able to record and also you cannot easily (if at all) cast the app to your TV so im happy I went for the TV package as well.

No more dodgy streams, im looking forward to being able to watch Pro14 and Heineken Cup at home this year. Last time was I was able to do that was RTE...

You can easily cast the app to TV via chromecast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Have done the same. Went from Virgin to Eir. Gain the Eir/BT sports packages and multiroom whilst still saving €330 for the year.

The missus will be thrilled when she discovers I have 5 live Pro14 games this weekend to watch.

The app if fully compatible with Chromecast, they even make a big song and dance about it on their website.

I could have written this. Really pleasantly surprised with the Eirvision service, the box is much nicer to use than VM's, can't believe I'll be going legit with my sport viewing for the next while! Serious amount of rugby, 3 or 4 English games on every week also!

I think Eir could do a number in Dublin this season, quite a few in my office talking about switching over now also...

Is Freesports available to viewers in ROI only via Freesat and Freeview (DTT via an aerial) for those who can receive Freeview via N. Ireland or Wales?

I don't find the picture quality very good tbh. That's either from a p.c. or high end android phone via the Eir Sport app.

Heard others say the same but I've never had any issues with picture quality, streaming constantly at atleast 720p

I've looked at the Eir vision box too, but you're paying all that extra money for channels that are 90% FTA anyway. Only advantage I see is recording the Eir Sport channels.

They're still way, way behind Virgin Media in terms of broadband quality though, for most parts of Dublin. Fibre-to-the-home might change things, but that's not really available here. Personally rugby alone just isn't enough to get me to switch away from the stability and speed of VM's broadband to the flakiness of Eir.

Think that's why they may do well in Dublin now - the fibre to the home (took the engineer about 6 hours to run the cable underground across the estate:D) is superb, on a par with VM, so far!

Anyone have the settings for Freesports HD? I've found the SD channel, but I can't find the HD one.

There is no HD one as yet unfortunately.

I don't think freesports is available in hd yet on freesat. They were testing for a while but it never launched on schedule. There are pretty crap games on freesports anyway and if not in HD the picture is worse than tv3.

Yeah, there was a Portugese football game on when I tuned it in and it was barely watchable the SD quality was so bad.
