Who said only 10000 turned out and Jezz what’s with the passionate outburst on how many people did or didn’t turn out today- take a chill pill there or you’ll need that priest to administer the last rights :pac:

Do you really believe the ****3 you're coming up with in this thread?

You’re the one obsessed over crowd size!!

Take it from me. There were huge crowds there today. The buzz was fantastic. Everyone in great form -feckin brilliant day all in all!

Excuse the language holy father ;)

Eh read my post again. I never said there wasn’t a huge crowd there today. I questioned why someone claimed only 10000 and where they got the figure from

FFS - this is the greatest ****fest of a thread I’ve seen in AH in a very longtime,

I think you get his point though, right? Half the city and most of the major roads in the county were shut down or restricted, many businesses closed on the assumption that regular customers wouldn't get access, all that hype... it just doesn't seem like it was justified.

Nobody's obliged to be chill about it, given how some feel about the Pope and the Church.

The aerial shots are much more reliable than eyewitness accounts. Those photos I screengrabbed are at exactly the time he was passing through, on the main thoroughfares in the city centre. You don’t give people’s intelligence much credit, do you?

What point are you trying to make? The Pope drove through the city centre and the crowds were at least four or five deep all along the route (and much deeper in places like the length of O'Connell Street, College Green and Dame Street). Anyone would think he had travelled through deserted streets today.

Given that the motorcade was going to go through in less than a minute and there was nothing else to see, unlike St Patrick's Day, that was a big turnout.

It's moving to celebration mode. Christians in Croker. Leave 'em be and let them have their night out. Even if mental illness appears to be a common theme.

Was agreeing with you until you threw mental illness into it. Totally unnecessary and lacking in class.

There are bound to be a lot attending. It's like the last big rally of a dying party. Most dictators believe they will win, right up until the end.

I wish we could bottle the buzz/atmosphere that was in town today when the anticipation was building. Everyone was in great form and really positive.

This little country has its share of problems but if this man Pope Francis can do that and bring that positivity to us, I’m all for it

Off you go and count them so.

    1, 2, 3, 4,

You do know how to count don’t you?

The aerial shots mean I don’t have to do any counting. :) I haven’t said anything about figures, just that the crowds look sparse.

    Why so tetchy?

The backlash is understandable given the bizarrely large numbers that have turned out to see him.

Could you imagine it if they won the referendum?

What does this mean? I'm pretty sure many practising Catholics voted Yes. Otherwise it would never have passed as it wouldn't have had the numbers to do so.

Not quite sure how you are so positive about this?

    Do you do omnipresence?

Why bizarre ? Just shows how many don't care about child abuse.

That it’s a poor crowd. Obvs. Four or five deep is pretty poor. My sister decided to brave town to shop earlier around the time he was passing through. No “braving” was required, despite the warnings. She said it was a breeze and quieter than a normal Saturday because shoppers stayed away and the Pope crowds were very easily navigated and didn’t replace the usual shopping crowds.

I just find it all very interesting. Crowd control stuff always interests me.

Oliver Callan, is he trying to be funny?

Oh I forgot, he is always trying to be funny and continually fails. Now he is seemingly qualified to be a social commentator, spouting that he has done som "research" on the subject, makes one or two wild claims, and no one even questions what he spouts.

Another idiot who is full of his own importance, countenanced by RTE and our licence fee

Yes because the Church won't win any more. This is the Church in it's death throws

You’re questioning people’s intelligence on the thread- and you’re calling me tetchy? ;)

Reread the post you’re referencing. I said that that poster didn’t think much of OTHER people’s intelligence. I didn’t question his. Seriously, go back and read my post. Get it right.

Actually, here’s my post, with the relevant bit highlighted.

Read posts more carefully if you are going to reference them.

And then you come home , get on the internet and accuse me of being obsessed with crowd size which I’ve no interest in, other than asking a simple question for people to justify where they’re gettIng their figures from - your Papal blessing obviously wore off a bit quick on your journey home, :)

I’m actually still in town but anyway regarding crowd size it was massive. Apologies if I took up your post wrong I’m on a mobile at the moment

RTE have nearly all the "celebs" on but where is Marty Morrissey? Croker without Marty isn't a party.

I don’t know about this - I know plenty of people who have turned their back on participating in the Catholic Church because of church scandals who popped out for look at the pope/popemobile.

So you won't need to worry about the referendum to completely separate church & state ?

The pope in his speech mentioned his pain and shame regarding the horrible and disgusting things that happened in this country and other countries around the world. The way posters are going on in here, you would think that he was personally responsible for all the pain and suffering the poor victims had to go through..

Good to see that begrudgery is still alive and well in this little ****hole of a country...

Fair enough. I was wondering why you went at me. I thought there was a fair enough crowd there today myself. Glad you enjoyed it. I couldn’t go myself so watched on TV and really enjoyed it too.
