Great at what? Talking? Wearing a nice dress? Singing? Overcoming difficult circumstances? Which of these things will she be judged on? What is the actual criteria here, does anyone know?

It’s great that she is not a junkie. Must have been tough growing up in that household.
I have known doubt about that at all.

I'm asking what is it they are supposed to be great at to be crowned the Rose of Tralee?

I think it's sort of a mix of things the judges look for.
I'd say the judges have the winner pciked after observing them during the week and seeing how the mix with people and how they deal with situations.
Yes, a mix of "things ". What things ? That's what I'm asking. I once asked one of the organisers this and he could not give me an answer.

The impression I go was they are looking for a level headed person, who isn't shy, can deal with talking with various members of the public, who'd do charity events, etc.

I can't wait for the next sob story from an unemployed, transgender with a gimpy leg, that was molested by Harvey Weinstein, whose parents melted in chernobyl and Donald Trump once sent them a mean tweet.

and their dream is to "empower others" . . .the contestants have to make sure push all of today's pc's buttons and agenda's, or they will be lynched by the media.

    Non political contest . . . NOT

pc according to who's politics though ? ;)

Do people ever get tired of the lovely girls/Rose of Tralee comparison? That reference is over 20 years old at this stage.

It was funny then, now its unoriginal and hacky from overuse.

The correct PC politics seems to be the biggest factor for winning.

The dream PC candidate today would be non white, lesbian feminist with a phd, who has an all Ireland GAA medal, went to a gaelscoil, and delivers a panti bliss style political manifesto, and is having her second baby via IVF and a sperm doner. Nothing less will be acceptable.

That's what passes for Irish humour. All we need now is Rory from Mrs Browns boys to say " Ah Mammy"
    Fûcking hillarious

In fairness, that's not true of RoT.

Actually, that's a great idea. Just like the way certain towns miraculously had moving statues and kids who say the Sun dancing in the sky, there must be some place that could make a name for itself by arranging this. It's probably beyond the pay grade of Local TDs and Councillors though. If Claire Byrne hosted it, I'm in!!

My GAA club did it as a fundraiser before! The Bros of Tralee! 😋

    Beautiful accent and great gimmick

If Bridgette Abbott doesn’t win then I give up.

Why are most of the escorts at the Rose of Tralee mildly ok looking at best, usually rather plain or downright spud in the mouth ugly?

Is so that the Roses’ boyfriends/partner’s don’t get too jealous or something?

I knew someone who became an escort to make his mark in social circles as a young man, with his parents very approving. “He’s an escort in this year’s Rose” much to the approval of aunties, uncles etc. I think families might encourage the “plain” son to go forward and make his social mark this way.

That’s actually a genuine Newfie accent. I went there on holiday, couldn’t believe my ears when I heard it. Sounded like a bad imitation accent that I might try and put on, with hotchpotch of Irish Traveller, strong English West Country, and some Canadian. It’s an unreal accent, one of the strongest, most peculiar ones I’ve ever heard. Comes from an isolated small population with old Irish & British roots.

I saw a programme about the Fogo Island Inn the folks running it did sound like that.

Like the election of a pope by the college of cardinals, we are not to know the criteria. But I bet there’s similarities, the judges somehow vote for their top “favourites” (ie subjective opinion of what great a great girl they) and by some alchemy/algorithm one comes out on top. Probably a random factor in there, eg each judge pick three favourite roses, names into the hat, and one is drawn to be the winner. The more popular roses would stand a better chance of coming out of the hat. That’s my best guess.
