R and GTD available in estate in the UK. No idea why not Ireland, story of our lives I suppose!

Awful lot of GTI, GTD and R models in Frank Keane at the moment. Not all 182, but plenty of them floating around. Nice looking fleet of cars.

Was anyone due to change in 2019?

It's a complete mess, no factory orders before 2019, no specific prices and worse still no more 3 door cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,548 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Would you really buy another new MK7 next year anyway? It’ll be a run out model next year. MK8 around the corner, probably summer/autumn next year.

And yes, sadly the 3 door Golf is unlikely to be ever seen again. Not many (or even any?) options left out there if you’re adamant on 3 door unless you step down a size to something like a Fiesta ST? Even the new Polo is 5 door only.

It looks like VAG have made a complete sh1te of this WLTP emissions issue. It’ll surely harm sales significantly for them. There’s only so many stock cars out there before stock dries up. I can see on carzone that the likes of Frank Keane has loads of slightly used R/GTI/D stock. But nothing brand new.

I would have considered a run out if it were to have some nice spec but there's no way I would ever consider a 5 door.

I'm not dropping down a size, fiesta size car doesn't interest me as I have the mk2 golf as well.

I might consider a TTS but there are no nearly new ones for sale and new they are a shocking price.

Having said that, I'm having thoughts of holding onto mine for another year and then going electric.
I don't really need the likes of an R or TT. I have the mk2 gti that I can take for a blast, have a G wagen coming next month that I can use if I needed to go on a long drive.
Electric would suit my commute, I can charge at work so it would cost me zero.
Tolls are 50% off, another nice saving as I use the toll at least one way per commute.

The vw ID looks like a good option on paper, ground up designed electric car with good range. One charge would do me 10 days driving.

I'm due to change next month but decided to just keep it. As you say there's nothing really out there that isn't a silly price and the usual trend of having a final year runout model with crazy spec thrown in for a normal price isn't happening due to the production freeze. I would say if you're happy enough to wait until the middle of next year you may find this happening, but they'll only be months away from.the mk8 by then.

What's the timeline for the Mk8? I believe I read 2019, GTI 2020 and R late 2020? I believe it's the US that's getting the R late. Probably totally wrong here though...

I know VW's infotainment is very good but it's not good enough to replace climate control dials, so I hope the final product has them. I see so many people who want that kept separate from the touch screen.

The new Touareg has the climate controls in the touch screen and I have to admit it's much better than you would expect it to be.

Drove a 2016 GTD with DSG yesterday. Think I have narrowed my car search down to one of these or a Lexus IS300h.

I'll be getting on finance and seriously contemplating buying the one I test drove on PCP, it had winterpack and DCC, adaptive CC. Is there anything else people think is a must have?

This particular one looks to have been for sale for a while now and they have lowered the price on it, what should I be looking out for?

Can you get pcp on a two year old car?

Whatever you do, don’t buy a near three year old car on PCP. Get traditional HP if you’re borrowing.

They offer PCP on second hand cars but higher percentage rate as far as I know. I'd love to know what kind of figures you'd get on second hand as it may be an option for the GF on a small car.

Why is that? I'd have thought just paying for the amount it'll depreciate by over the course of the 2 or 3 years makes sense in theory?

You’re assuming it’ll only depreciate by that amount (chances are it’ll be more and you’ll have to deal with negative equity) but the fundamental idea of PCP is to reduce payments by propping up the GFV of the car. There is less GFV in a used deal (particularly a 2 year old - 6 months is one thing) so you’re going to be much closer to traditional repayments but at least with HP you won’t have a balloon around your neck.

I suppose, but if you save for the balloon over the course of the agreement it's cheaper than HP as you make interest on your savings vs paying interest on the full amount. Granted a lot of people won't do that, but if done that way it makes sense to me on paper.

Repayments are approximately halved on pcp and interest rate is lower than HP so I plan on putting aside more a month than the repayments and being able to pay it off then.

Looking at cars that are 5 years old they seem to be going for at least double the GFV is at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,496 ✭✭✭MarkN

I’ve seen PCP versus HP where there was €100 in the difference (if that) so I don’t know where the roughly halved figures are coming from!

Is the interest in pcp payments not charged on the full amount including the gfv outstanding?

    It is.

Oh if that's the case then yea it would be better to go with HP, but I always thought the interest was charged on the purchase price minus GFV. *However I've never bought on PCP, or seriously looked into it

Interest is charged on the amount you borrow. In PCP you are still borrowing the balloon so you pay interest on it.

If PCP and hp rates are the same then hp is less expensive as you will pay off the balance of the loan quicker, meaning the interest is applied to a smaller amount as the contact runs it's course. This is why PCP rates are less, they look better value as the rate is lower but the amount of interest payable can often be similar. For example, there wouldn't be much in 4% PCP vs 6% hp.
