For those of you unfamiliar with the case, Dr. Bawa Garba, yesterday, won her appeal against her striking off for her part in the death of 6 year old Jack Adcock in Leicester in 2011.

Jack passed away after a litany of failures at a hospital wide level when he was admitted with sepsis. Dr. Bawa Garba was then his admitting doctor. She was subsequently convicted of gross manslaughter and given a 2 year suspended sentence, as was a nurse who cared for him.

I post this as I have witnessed many, many similar systemic failures in the HSE and I am only lucky that I have not been caught up in a sad situation like this.

I would advise anyone to start with this Panorama documentary which highlights some of the failings which occur in healthcare systems and which occur in Irish hospitals on a daily basis.

It is only through the excellence of our doctors, nurses, allied healthcare professionals and support staff that more cases like Jack's do not occur.

I agree with the verdict. Everyone makes mistakes, humans are fallible. It's up to the employer/authority to ensure that mistakes can't have serious consequences.
