Does anybody here think that McGuinness would actually get us over the line? When you think of what he achieved with Donegal and how he achieved it I'm not convinced! But interested to hear other peoples thoughts.

If McGuinness had the time and was available why would he manage any team other than Donegal?

It's not going to happen. Total wishful thinking and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that story was planted by someone with an axe to grind with Rochford.

Yeah I heard those rumour's over the weekend too. Apparently there is a group of people outside the country that are willing to fund a big name.

One thing is for sure, who ever is putting this stuff out to the papers obviously wants Rochford out.

The Donegal panel when McGuinness took over were a shambles, but he got them to buy in totally as too what he wanted from them. Same as he did with a pretty average U21 team prior to that. I`m not sure that Mayo panel would have done the same.
All irrelevant though as I cannot see him even if he had the time managing any county other than Donegal.

    Mayo sells, simple as that.

On the Jim question. I wouldn't be massively keen to have him. What he did was amazing but I don't think it would be easily repeated.

He had a group that needed putting into shape and brought a style of football that gave him an edge. I'm not sure that's easily recreated.

I would say he would have much more impact with the likes of Roscommon or maybe even Galway as they could be moulded more... don't ask me to explain that, just thinking out loud.

Then they should be told to mind their own ****ing business until there is an actual vacancy. Its the Co Board's responsibility.

McGuiness is trying to make a career in soccer and it would be a stupid move to manage any intercounty gaa team now. He'll always have the job offers in county football whenever he walks away from the soccer.

Maybe he's having a hard time actually getting a full time, paid job with soccer. Hence the interest in managing a GAA team again. If I was the owner of a professional soccer team, I might not want to hire someone who only decided to become a soccer coach last Tuesday and, who basically dedicated his entire life to a completely different sport for the guts of 30 years.

Perhaps I missed it, but I haven`t seen anywhere that McGuinness has expressed any interest in managing any GAA team or indeed any soccer team for that matter.
Last I heard he is was working on his soccer coaching badges to qualify for soccer management, and is hoping to get his final one around the beginning of the new year.
Doubt he is short of a few bob either. Money was good with Celtic, did ok financially from China I imagine and he has his weekly Irish Times column, his Sky gig and motivation workshops.

McGuinness did some job with Donegal but his timing was perfect.

When he took over Kerry, Armagh and Tyrone had slipped back from their 00s glory years and Dublin were still finding their feet a bit, same goes for Mayo. Plus Cork would start to all.

If he goes back in now he has a different beast in Dublin to contend with. It would be a lot harder to bridge the gap now.

I'd like him back managing all the same.

Is that a typo? If not then I'm confused

What he did with Donegal was unreal but there was a lot that went his way.

Tyrone and Kerry had stared to fade and Dublin were not quite the force they are now.

He didn't. They never do. That's where all the fun in speculating comes from. :D

Maybe even someone high up in the county board...

It's all very disrespectful to Rochford who has given no indication that he's even considering stepping down.

Yes should have said when he took over Donegal. Looks like I was saying he took over Kerry!

It is pretty clear what he was saying! There is a comma missing, but no need to be pedantic!

He would have to come up with a very different game plan for the current Mayo panel.

There's no way they could do it Donegal 12/14 style with the amount of miles on the clock.

I actually thought you were saying "When he took over (ie took over Donegal), Kerry, Armagh and Tyrone had slipped back from their 00s glory years and Dublin were still finding their feet a bit, same goes for Mayo. Plus Cork would start to all!

Looks like someone is trying to destabilise the manager, wouldn't surprise me in the slightest is someone high enough up the command structure of the county board is briefing against him.

If there is indeed any semblance of truth to the money being available then it should be made available to the running of the team and not just one individual.

I personally think that having a summer off for everyone could have been for the best. Recharge the batteries, lads get to enjoy themselves outside of a stressful environment.

I've said it before but if this mayo team ever win an all Ireland it'll be in spite of that county board.

There isnt an iota of evidence suggesting anyone in the Co Board is behind this. And after all it's The Sun ffs

I don`t know about his timing being perfect. He basically only got the job at his third attempt because nobody else wanted it.
I don`t think Dublin are that different a beast now. They won the AI in 2011 again in 2013 and were also being talked about, same as now, unbeatable in 2014 until McGuinness tactically took them apart.
