That isn't actually true though. The reason Smalling looked very good that season was because he was very good that season. The compilation below is the exact opposite of being shielding by those around him, a lot of the time he's bailing out the other players.

Can't they continue to make loan signings upto Aug 31 and then sign permanently in January?
This is the one thing I am hoping is happening and the reason a lack of movement in the big clubs this week - loans with a view to permanency the way to go!

I would imagine that statement was to put pressure on Woodward to get a deal over the line. That hasn't happened apparently.

I can't remember ever going into a season less enthusiastic than I am this year.

Hopefully we can turn a corner and get some nice football played this year, but I have my doubts.

Smalling is capable of defending well which is obviously crucial for a good defender, however, what that clip doesn't seem to show (admittedly I didn't watch it all...) is what he's like on the ball and how poor he generally is with his distribution after winning a tackle/receiving a pass.
