This window is the club beginning the process of moving JM on, if he actually quits it will be all the better for them as they won't have to pay him off. He was brought in to provide instant success like he did everywhere else (ref.signing Ibrahimovic). Jose is/was the 'hired gun' if you will. That didn't really arrive, rather, an improvement in results to get into the top 4 and a couple of secondary targets. Jose was hired to win the title. It looks unlikely that he is going to get there so now the board are making the call that his methods (replace Martial with William) aren't worth punting even more money on. I'd be shocked if he's still manager this time next year.

You are allowing your opinion of Jose cloud what you think he was brought in for. He was recruited first to bring United up to the contracted minimals they have to make revenue (top 4 etc). That is why he got a new contract, club were very happy with his returns.

After working with players, Jose wanted more to push on, he was looking around and seeing what others were doing to win (City buying what Pep wanted, then buying more as an example). He does not think that will come at United without more/continued big investment.

An actual reason to change him would be the club expecting a manager to deliver more with what Jose was given. But nothing actually suggests the club expect more from him.

I'd agree. Looks like they hoping he will have a meltdown and leave.

You mean they are hope the club will have an awful season since they dont have the balls/are too tight to actually sack him without ensuring the club goes backwards.

If that's the case, then it is a disgraceful way to carry out business. Be decisive.

Luckily, I don't believe that that is what is going on at all.

That backline is a Bailly injury away from disaster. Martial has never worked on the right, so not sure why he is there. No clue how good Fred is going to be either.

I'm more optimistic than most United fans I've spoken to, but calling that side brilliant is disingenuous and I feel like most people who will push that idea are people that want Jose out and can say "But we have a brilliant squad!".

    It just isn't true.

And if and when Bailly gets injured you have a smalling who was class last season. I really dont understand why he is so underrated.

Maybe brilliant is the wrong word to describe a team that finished on 81 points last season  As a Liverpool fan I get a chuckle when you guys fail. I am sure most of you feel vice versa. But come on, talking down your side is like talking down the City side. Yes of course they had a great league season (as did ye by the way) but they didnt really add to their team.

Jose is talking down expectations becuase he didnt get a big name signing. Months of Griezman, Neymar, Mbappe, Bale and Ronaldo has resulted in no marquee signing. That sucks yes but ye still have quality in that side. Ye still have a front 3/4 (if you include Pogba) that can get goals and win games. Ye still have a solid defence and ye still have a midfield that can hold the ball up. Not to even mention unlike Chelsea and Liverpool ye didnt ahve to spend big for a (they will hope) a world class goalkeeper.

This talk isnt to put the boot into Jose. This talk is to say "what the f**k is all teh moaning about?". Let Jose moan if he wants. He always deflects attention from his team for one reason or another. Thats his thing. But as fans there is no way ye should be anything less than optimistic.

Godin is probably in the top 3 centre halfs in the world though but can't see him leaving Atletico.

Gary Neville said, Its deadline day watch it all unfold on Sky sports, United will buy 3 with a wink ,
A Sky employed ex United player trying to get his supporters to tune in ,he is  hardly serious ,

Hes supposed to have a low release clause. Still doubt we'll match it mind.

That doesn't really fit into what is happening tho, to be fair.

Season 1: Bought Bailly for potential, and big money.
Season 2: Bought Lindelof for potential, and big money.
Season 3: wants to buy an experienced CB, for big money.

Why not buy the experienced defender in season 2? instead of buying more potential and complain about not having experience....

Pogba (I know he is younger but hailed as one of the world's best)
    Ibrahimovic
    Sanchez
    Mhikitaryan

He looks to bring in a blend of youth and experience

You could argue for lukaku to be included in the experienced bunch but it doesn't matter

It was in 2015. Especially for an unknown. The market has changed since.

Anyways, the point seems to have completely over your head so I'll have to explain it to you again.

Season 1: Bought Bailly for potential
Season 2: Bought Lindelof for potential
Season 3: wants to buy an experienced CB

Why didn't ye buy the experienced CB one of the other seasons instead? Instead of waiting til after ye had made these big transfers?

What was 2015? 1/2 years before either player was signed? Stones is the comparable CB transfer around the time Bailly and was signed and VVD/Laporte for the time Lindelof was signed. They were all for significantly more money.

There were 2 senior CBs at the club who had been there for 5/6/7 years at those points along with Rojo who was experienced enough. I still would prefer trying to get a partnership going with what's there and using the money to improve full backs and RW but obviously neither of those look to be happening.

Yep I'd have him in a heartbeat, perfect defensive signing

I'm not going to try to have a discussion about all of the reasons why I think that Chris Smalling is not class at all, the best thing I can do is ask what level of team he would go to if he was sold and for how much? I'd say the best he could hope for is an Everton or the likes, probably for around 20m and that is generous.

You then have Shaw, who has been a flop under two managers, Darmian, who has been a flop under two managers and Lindelof who has not shown all that much for United, so we are banking on him really stepping up this year. That defence is not a championship winning defence.

I'm optimistic about the midfield and frontline, but that squad is not good enough to challenge for a title, and that is where we should be aiming.

I've managed to stay away from the madness of this forum for 2 years but need to rant at someone today....

What the Actual F**k is going on at Old Trafford since 2013? 3 managers have come in, not one seems have realised the back 4 is a mid table quartet with 2 converted wingers and 2 journeymen centre halves,

In fairness they signed Shaw to address LB which at the time looked the perfect fit but that hasn't worked out partly due to his injury, They signed Darmian who, again looked a good fit at RB but hasn't worked out either. Do they move either on and try again? No we buy Sanchez so that we can push Martial (the only transfer success since Fergie left) out.

In the meantime, even Gareth Southgate has copped that the 2 united centre halves aren't up to it.

So what happens? Somehow, 4 or 5 years and 3 managers later, United decide they need a CB (they need 2) who can play football. Spurs have a good one they don't use - lets buy him. That Maguire lad (who looked just as good 2 seasons ago at Hull) seems to have played well for England - lets buy him. There's that Columbian lad who can't get a game for Barca and looked good at the world cup - lets buy him. Or Zurt f*cking Zouma who was on loan at Palace? Seriously is there nobody at Utd doing any actually planning or thinking or is everything made up as they go along?

2 seasons ago Utd wasted the summer trying to buy Hummels and Ramos. When neither materialised did they just decide "oh well, that didn't work out - lets buy another winger"??? Where is the evidence at United that they are looking to build a squad and not a merchandising team?

    Club is a shambles.

I don’t get this “late bid for godin” thing.

Are the papers suggesting that the club has known for months who it needs to sign. Focused on one player who it wasn’t sure wanted to sign with a club that was never going to sell. And now hours before the close of the transfer window has decided to hit after another target?

I am no fan of his but I don’t think Woodward or the owners are that thick that they would have all their eggs in one basket right up until deadline....

    See transfer window 2013.

Woodward is clueless, the club structure is a mess.

And can be got easily for 20m EUR provided he wanted to move.

I will let one of the other glazerites defend Woodward. I don’t Trust his priorities so I’m not defending him....

I would be more inclined to believe that the club is trying to be too clever with haggling and might get caught out...
