Light shade not fitting

Stupid question here but we bought, what we thought, was a pendant light shade today. When husband removed bulb the middle circle (as in the bit for hanging up the light shade) is way too big. Did i buy a lamp shade? Any way of doctoring it to fit?

Ikea also sell them. I think it's a difference between European sizing and ours.
