i dont unless its formal, so on here and in text messages i would adopt text speak. 'u heading to pub?'' not ''Are you heading to the pub?''

would you be arsed using perfect spelling and structure in your own messages and posts?

its a habit for me where i like using less words, while still making sure the message is understandable.

I would, for the simple reason that if I bother to write something, either on here or in a text to someone else, I want to make what I'm saying is clear and easy to understand.
Just for the sake of plain common courtesy, in other words.

Yep, but I use SwiftKey on my phone which uses predictive text and auto-complete. Most phones have this functionality now don't they?

I can't stand txtspk.. to be fair, the example in the OP is grand, but anything that requires me to spend more time deciphering it than reading the content isn't worth replying to.

Likewise. The medium may be different but I'm the same person, so I try to be consistent. My one concession to the character constraint is the use of the ampersand!

Thanks to auto correct it just as easy to write correctly, so why not do it.

I enjoyed the auto correct function at the when it first came out , but then the novelty of it wore out and I grew tired of its shirt.

I hate textspeak, IF my grandson sends me a text using it, he very quickly follows it up with a properly written text, as if he has just realised who he has sent it to :D

You don't get charged per word or letter, nor are you constrained by character limits.

My parents spent time, money and effort sending me to school, so I'll try and use it most of the time.

Not anymore you're not but back in the day you were hence the birth if text speak.

No, can't. It's not in me.

Now that I think of it I don't know of anyone in my social circle (young or old) that use text speak in their messages... to me at least.

A friend of mine used to write everything in text speak, I used to have to read the message out loud to get the gist of what was being sent.

I hate it, what really bothers me is that in this day and age with auto-correct, you actually have to go out of your way to write in text speak, some people seem to o it as a definitive choice, not as a quick/shorthand.

To each their own I guess.

My 83 yr old dad uses txt spk 2 msg his children and grandchildren.
He can get an entire conversation into one line.
It's so perfectly abbreviated, that sometimes I have to ring him to ask him what he means.:o

I feel stingy if I type '&' instead of 'and', but I almost always use proper spelling and punctuation in my texts.
And I confess to twitching if someone writes 'tanks' instead of 'thanks'.

I don't receive any messages written in text speak either. I just wouldn't reply.

There was no need for txt speak once T9 went out the window.

I do. When you’ve a full keyboard there you might as well tbh.

Txt spk came about when it was expensive to send sms messages. Since we have whatsapp and Viber there’s no need for it.

None of my friends use it.

I still know people without smart phones or who don't use messaging apps. So it happens. I don't care how someone writes something as long as I understand it.

I try not to bother contacting anyone in the first place if I can help it. Got the recluse thing going on a bit.

It depends on if I think the recipient understands text speak or not - like old people for example.

I always use normal spelling and punctuation. To receive anything in textspeak is like nails down a blackboard for me. I have also received business communications and job applications using textspeak, which I hate and consider to be a huge red flag. I know I’m a bit of an old dinosaur and should be more accepting of the trend, but I also like a good, old fashioned letter through the post too. And I use a fountain pen!

Never texted or had a text in my life and have no desire to. Only had a mobile phone a year.
Glad to hear text speak has gone. rip

No one sends me txt spk. No one sends me messages :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,667 ✭✭✭Hector Bellend

    Of course. It's only proper.

I find that being sloppy or lazy crosses over into other things like e-mails.

    No excuse other that space.

I'm intrigued. How have you managed this?

Text speak does my head in, the amount of people using it on FB... Whenever I see it in a group I automatically think there's something wrong with that person.
The worst was when I asked something in a local group band got a reply in it... From my son's teacher.

I wish I had that luxury.

Not really true. But I rarely get traditional text messages - few use them

There is still a character limit on sms messages.
I use text speak from time to time, mainly because I'm too much of a scrooge to pay for 2 messages, when I can condense it into one with text speak.

As mentioned already though, the character limit probably isn't that much of an issue these days with the likes of whatsapp/vibr available, together with the fact that most people are probably on cellfone plans with unlimited data/texts etc.

I find that text speak was popular about ten to fifteen years ago. Now you can write a a big long message and recieve am emoji as a response.

I have one friend who uses text speak via whatsapp . I open it and have no idea what she is on about . I have to break it down and say it out loud . Then gr8 becomes great ! Is it not easier to just type great !

I hate text speak, incorrect grammar and misspelling. I’ve often used abbreviations in a message when I’m in a hurry and had to go back and change it before sending because I just can’t bring myself to send it.
