I seen online, might have been Tom Hardys instagram, that the release date on a poster was 10. 5. 18.

Now, I thought it strange that it was coming out in the wake of the Avengers film, so was a bit miffed and had a bit of a mini rant until herslef pointed out it was more than likely October 5th and they were using the American way of reporting the date.

I felt like an idiot. :o

    ....ah ****.

    Another trailer has popped up:

It could still be good. I certainly haven't seen anything in the trailers that'd put me off, but nothing to make me super excited for it either though.

That said, still not fond of Tom Hardy's accent in it. It just sounds really off and forced.

ya, looks ok to me too. I've seen a lot worse trailers !!

Yeah, I mean it looks fine, just in this day & age of Shared Universes feels almost archaic to have a self contained story like this.

If the budget's reasonable, then any modest success will do nicely; if Sony have channelled 100+ million into this it could bomb; it's debatable how attractive Venom is to casual fans, let alone without Spider Man as the obvious foil.

I love the look of Venom, think they nailed it. Agree though, I'm not a fan of Hardy's accent.

Probably will be part of a shared universe

That's true, but it's not a very interesting one; a weird clutch of Spidey villains, likely without the actual hero they're supposed to butt heads with. It's an odd one.

Is that a hint of Carnage towards the end of the trailer with the blade hands ?
Looks like we're getting another symbiote as the protagonist??

Not sure if it constitutes a spoiler since its been openly discussed by the actor I believe - but
    Riz Ahmeds character becomes Riot

I like that it is a self contained story, not everything has to be shared universes off the bat. Some of the Marvel ones tired with that because you never felt you were watching any sort of conclusion to anything, simply a film to setup a sequel so more hero pals can appear. Venom has before and is well able to carry storylines without Spiderman, who I personally find quite an uninteresting character.

If this was Venom from MASK then we would be onto something....

Looks like Riz Ahmed took the teachings from Nightcrawler to heart :D

Unsure what to make of this. Venom always seemed like a cool and imposing villain character for Spider-Man. The look is spot on and hopefully Hardy (plus CGI) can pull it off.

    🤪

I'm more excited about this than the upcoming Ant Man film, which is currently doing nothing for me, I suppose waiting so long for it has put me off it and I like Rudd but I've just no interest in seeing it in the cinema.

I only came across this. Was so happy to hear of a Venom film, then I see that Tom Hardy is the lead in the role. Ugh. Guess we'll have another film of him striking a few blue steel poses and muttering unintelligible lines.

Venom to no longer be R rated :(

    link

A real shame, as Deadpool and Logan have done really well in the box office, and were also great films. Also further back the likes of Kick Ass , Dredd or Watchmen also turned out to be very good films, and I think the level of violence enhanced the films, and they would not have been as good without having the R rating

A non r rated Venom, doesn't make sense!

That's disappointing. Can feel the enthusiasm waning.

I was somewhat looking forward to this as I'm a fan of the character.
PG-13 though is a real kicker for this...

So I guess that'll mean either it goes back to the Editing Room for chopping, or reshoots. Probably too late in the day for the latter, so I'd worry about the final cut being a hot mess of jarring transitions.

Counter-point: Drag Me To Hell was PG-13 and remains one of the most pleasingly nasty and grotesque American horror films of the last decade (just about a decade... man I’m old). It can be done.

I mean, the fact there’s an exceedingly uninspiring director behind this would be far more cause for concern than the bloomin’ age rating :)

I'd say they're panicking over a realisation that unlike Deadpool or a Stephen King adaptation like IT, there's a pretty small demographic that'd even know what or who Venom is. Horror and Comedy are also pretty broad genres anyway, so it was never that big a push to sell Deadpool and IT from R territory. So they're saving face by clawing the film back into the biggest bucket as possible

The tone of the trailers is nothing like Deadpool.
I don't see how it's aimed at the same sort of grossout comedy angle.

Maybe horror drama, but I don't see the comedy, unless it's unintentional comedy of the obviously apalling script.

How they've made a film with this budget and the sorts of cast members involved with a script that sounds like a thirteen year old wrote it, without having a mutiny from the cast and crew is a triumph in itself.

I really can't believe that it's a real film and that's real dialogue. It's honestly blowing my mind. I'd expect better out of Sharkdnado.

And why on earth does it sound like Tom Hardy has necked a pint of treacle before saying his lines?

The actual venomy bits look quite good. It looks like they've ****ed this.
It's a waste. Marvel would've actually done something decent with him, I think. I think they're getting the hang of villains. Sony are a shower of gormless hacks.

I didn't say it was, that wasn't my point. To be clear, I only mentioned Deadpool as it came up in the linked article. My point was that a broad comedy or horror movie is a much easier sell as an R-rated product than what amounts to a fairly niche super(anti)hero property.

My suspicion is that Sony are panicking, cutting their losses and trying to maximise the audience; whether that's because the movie's a turd, or they're freaking out that a 'horror' superhero film will bomb.

It's kinda the Last Frontier of Superhero films: I can't immediately think of an true horror-infused Superhero film. The Fantastic Four reboot hinted at it before the Trank / Studio meltdown, while the now in-limbo New Mutants is supposed to be a full-on superhero horror film but that seems to have disappeared into reshoot & political hell

I wasn't pointing fingers, and actually I saw a video asking the question about whether Sony were trying to ape something like Deadpool with the writing:

    (From 5:00)

The dialogue about the turd twisting in the wind, or whatever it was, and eating people's faces and stuff, as well as Hardy's mumbling dialogue, feels a bit like someone trying badly to do irreverent comedy, but going for that seems at odds with the trailer. The general tone seems to veer more towards drama or horror, but the dialogue feels like a small child trying to ape something like Deadpool.

I'd agree about dropping it to PG. It must've been clear that the script was garbage all along and it seems like whoever is responsible for trying to sell the film either has nothing to work with, so is just cutting it together as best they can, or they don't understand the tone of the film, so the trailers are totally dissonant with the film. It sounds like a mess and they know that, so they're trying to squeeze whatever they can out of it by making sure everyone can come to see it.

Generally I'm perfectly happy to give films the benefit of the doubt but when you can't even cobble a trailer together without the cracks showing, that's not a good sign.

Yeah, they could be looking directly at Dredd and thinking they need to bring down the rating.

Now I love Dredd but it was a box office failure, Garland said this himself.
