Do some posters actually have a life outside of boards?

There are a lot of lonely people out there, desperately craving attention and someone to talk to. A quick browse of the Personal Issues forum confirms this. Boards posters out the outcasts, the ones who ate their school lunch alone in the computer room, repeatedly refreshing the page to hope someone "liked" their joke about coke and hookers. The ones who never got invited to parties and spent their Friday nights at home on the laptop with the Late Late Show in the background.

I remember at my first (and last) Boards beers I was sitting down at a table having a chat with an acquaintance. A middle aged simpleton stood at the end of our table, dribbling down his XXL shirt with a goofy smile plastered on his face while staring at us. It was as if he wanted to join the conversation but didn't know how. His 50,000 posts online didn't translate into real life social skills sadly.

Why not mingling with boards crowd on your boards beer night?

It would be easy enough to rack up big post counts in short timespans if you a) have a boring desk job that facilitates you browsing forums all day and b) if you are one of these people that love a long back n' forth argument. You can check any thread that has lots of pages / hundreds of replies and you can be guaranteed by the late game it will be just 3 or 4 people trying to out debate each other, and most of them will have huge post counts.

I am one of the 15000 posts within four years person you refer to Jupiterkid.
Basically I have devoted my life to Boards and ensure that nothing else gets in the way of me posting. Every morning at approximately 6 am I go through each forum individually and decide which one is worthy of my wisdom or humour. This is very time consuming. At midday I take a break. Due to my robotic and rigid nature I can work steadily for hours at a time. After break I search through all of my posts for the important ´thanks´ and also any disagreeing. In the event of a disagreement then I must spend two hours engaged with that poster in an attempt to make them see sense. Note the cap I put on this. Its important to not be sidetracked from my overall goal of adding more and more posts.

I hope that helps you understand.

I am one of those high post people too and I am routinely accused of being a bot.

I don't spend all my time on boards, nothing like it in fact.

I like a debate and I also have many many ways of being online. I counted 18 devices for connecting to the internet in my sitting room alone one evening. I found that crazy too btw. :)

I have three PC's in my workplace all connected, and have a phone in my pocket all day. Responding to posts is easy, it just depends on how interested you are I suppose.

I am in the garden working atm btw. (kinda :))

I think the stat is, on average we check our mobile phone every seven minutes. That is UK, we're probably worse.
If someone uses Boards as their major online interaction, easy to rack up numbers. I personally don't do other forums, not even private Boards. I just log in maybe twice a day. Only on my laptop don't use my mobile for it. Often have on in the background whilst working. just follow a number of my key interests.
Are you suggesting I should go to the pub instead and listen to some bore, talking s***e. At least here one can control the subjects you wish to discuss.

I have noticed that many of those with high post counts are self-declared IT professionals, so if you're working in front of a PC all day with lots of opportunities to post then you could easily accumulate an average of 10 or more posts per day.

Some boards posters end up very cultish. Look at those werewolf guys, a strange bunch!
Yeah, there's some right cults on Boards.

I have to admit I do have preconceptions when I see a poster with a large post count

I've been here nearly 12 years at this stage. Thought I'd have hit 30,000 by now but cut back a lot over the last couple of years. Avoiding After Hours certainly helps!

Insomnia, on the other hand, is a great post-count driver.

A number of low counts, not you Crack, are reregs. One eg has about 40 and says was at a Boards night out. Others may just be lurkers and read posts and don't largely post themselves. A good way to pick up info on a topic. Often very good experts in specific forums. I wouldn't judge on the post numbers more the contributions, even if I disagree with their standpoint.

There are definitely a few fantasists, the high post count is driven by the need to keep reiterating the details of their very interesting, very impressive, super real life.

Ten posts a day isn't huge amount, when it's consistently almost every day for years it's a bit of a "hmm" but yeah with smartphones, desk jobs etc not remarkable. Like someone said if it was ten tweets a day no-one would give a ****.

I've definitely days where I've thirty or forty posts like, either having the same five arguments I've been having on here for ten years (super productive I know) or making dick jokes in chat forums. But then i'd have weeks where I might have five posts or no posts because I'm busy.

A lot of sad people on this forum, no doubt about that. I pity them to be honest.

    Sad as in...?

Can't be sadder than constantly posting hardline loyalist rhetoric to wind people up like. ;)

Tbf, there's a hell of a lot more shinnerbots on here than loyalist flunkies

I don't really know how that changes my point though.

"Shinnerbot" also gets thrown out at people for simply empathising with nationalists in the north - I am completely sympathetic to nationalists and moderate republicans, but I think the IRA were murdering scum, and I wouldn't vote Sinn Fein if you paid me. I'd still be referred to as a shinnerbot here though. It's tedious.

From extensive personal experience :) it is generally trotted out when an argument is being lost.
