Will it really though? There's fellas asking 12k+ for 2011 GTDs at the minute. 2015 ones can be got for 22k with reasonable miles, they lose a lot in the first 2 to 3 years but after that the depreciation curve tends to plateau.

Does anybody know what the GTD or even a GTE is like to insure? Are they classed as a sports car?

I wondered what insurance for the GTE would be like. On Chill's website anyway, if you enter a GTE reg, it comes up as a 1.4 TSI so it seems to be insured the same as a normal 1.4 TSI Golf. It could be different if you were to actually go to do it though.

Some of ye may remember a few months back I posted a quick overview of some custom fitted blinds I bought for the back of the Golf. Post about it here: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=106802561&postcount=8309

Given the new car is inbound, they're obviously no longer of use to me so I may as well pass them on. I have them for the 2 rear passenger windows and the back window, also includes a carry bag for them and the clips to hold them in. If anyone wants them, I'm happy to let them go for the price of postage. If anyone wants them, PM me and I'll pick a name out of a hat next Monday.

How did you find them? Would you get them again?

Can't speak for the GTE but i inquired about a GTD and its giving an increase in my premium of €21, currently paying €620 on a 161 Fiesta ST. 32,7 year NCB, living in Tipperary.

I'm not discrediting this article by any means but to be fair, if you'd looked up the British VW website a few weeks ago, the only GTI on it was the Performance model so take from this what you will.

Looking at picking up a GTD and have been to a few dealers over the past few days. What's the going rate for a 2014 GTD these days? Was at a well known dealer today who was asking 19500 for a fairly standard spec GTD (No parking sensors, Sat Nav, sunroof etc..) I thought it was a bit high but maybe I'm just being naive.

There is one being sold by a dealer in Dublin for 17k, no idea how reputable the dealer is though. If you want most of those things then you really need to look at 2015 onwards where VW upgraded the standard spec. You always paid silly money for second hand Golfs here.

I have a deal done on a 2015 one and your right the spec improved massively on those.

Yep, it was the midst of the VW dieselgate scandal, they upped the spec and offers to offset the negative PR. The easiest way to tell the improved spec from the outside is the GPS antenna on the roof.

Ah to be honest I wouldn't be too pushed on the Sat Nav or Sunroof, I was more just using them as examples to show that the particular car wasn't massively spec'd hence the price tag.

Just hard to know what I should realistically be looking at paying for a 2014 GTD, because the price has varied so widely. For very similar spec'd cars I've been quoted anywhere between 19,500 - 24,000.

Apologies for hijacking the thread but just a quick question about the adaptive cruise control on the latest Golf, if you’re driving along the motorway at speed and a car cuts in in front of you, the ACC briefly slows the car down but do the brake lights come on...?
Also at slow speed in traffic I use the ACC down to zero mph and it’s quite effective at stopping the car but are the brake lights coming on...?

    Yes.

If your not bothered about spec then consider importing one from the UK. UK ones would have lower base spec than Irish ones but you might find better value there.

Not finished processing it yet, but looks like they're asking €30,995 for the GTI. Strong money I would have thought.

Seems about right for spec, mileage and condition (presuming it's in very good nick). I've seen a few for €29,995 with less spec and higher mileage. Won't hang around too long.

€40 a day for a loan car from VW. I always assumed they were a courtesy thing?

I presume I'll be paying for them to check the engine rattle too?

Who you going to? Some do offer a "free" courtesy car if they're supplying them themselves, others use a car rental company to do it.

Frank Keane Liffey Valley. They mentioned something about it being part of a service plan but it isn't showing up for my car. They won't have an auto for a few weeks and it's only for one day so not worth trying to sort out anyway.

Collected my GTD Friday, loving it so far, some step up from the Fiesta.

    Lovely bus, well wear.

Nice spec too with the winter pack on top.

Congratulations hooch. No doubt the fiesta is a great car when you're "on it", but as a daily that GTD is better in every way, and no doubt fun too when you want it to be. Happy motoring sir.

Thank you, yes it's a lovely spec.

    Nail on the head.

In the end the GTD was a bit of an obvious choice considering the miles I cover. Picked it up Friday and I am delighted with it. It is genuinely spotless, you would not say it's 3 years old. 1 owner from UK, verified history with VW network.
Spec is nice with factory alarm, nav, reverse camera, heated seats etc. The car came with four new tyres, wheels refurbed, serviced and fully detailed.

Really like the way it drives, so composed on the road and the adaptive cruise is an absolute marvel. This is my third Golf after two Mark 5's including a GTi, and it's by far the best.

I've done over 320 miles now and its reading just below half a tank, I reckon 500 should be easily achievable which is definitely good enough for me.

My longer term plan is to build a garage and have a classic for weekends so as a more civilised daily this is really good.

What kind of classic ye thinking?

Something cheap and fun, a 106 GTi maybe. I've love a nice original EG6 Civic SiR but they are mad money. Wont be until next year at least, getting garage built is next priority, getting married in 6 weeks so have to get that out of the way first:D

Get the classic now and use it as a wedding car, it would be silly not to do that. Not sure how 9k rpm would work outside the chapel but its definitely the right thing to do.

I'd love to but the finances wouldn't allow it right now, realistically it'll prob be 2020 before I can go shopping for something.

Ah I know, only messing. It's not a bad idea on the classic though. I think driving something less frequent makes it more special too. I daily drove an e30 and it took the shine off it a little, which I expected. I'd say if I drove it the odd weekend it would make it more of an occassion. Mine was a 91 though so still not a classic for tax so hard to justify holding onto as a 2nd car for me as well. This country isn't set up though for owning more than one car, unless you have deep pockets.
