Are people happy to start the season with Lindelof as first choice CB? I’d rate his first season a 5/10 on a generous day.

Going on last season no, but i would give him a 2nd chance. Needs to be stronger and bully forwards more in games

Don't get me wrong, outside of midfield, our depth all over the field is dodgy, and I'd be advocating for a RW first and foremost on the grounds that we don't really have one.

Point is that our center back options are far from sorted just cause we have Bailly and Lindelof. And Bailly especially has been very injury prone, compared to the two you mentioned.

Defence is easier though, from Blind to Rojo to Jones, all have slotted in and played to a good standard alongside Bailly or Smalling. Going after another CB creates strength in the bench but not game changing/winning strength.

Assuming Fred (in) and Herrera (clear of distraction) fix midfield. United are let down by the third forward who is not top quality to start with. If Lukaku is out it should be fine, (the missing player, call him Phantom) United can look to Sanchez, Pogba and Phantom to carry the load with Rashford coming in alongside top quality.

Been to Selhurst a good few times over the years due to relations who live in the area, and every time I've seen Zaha play he's been the best player on the pitch.

I'd take him at United in a heartbeat but he would be ridiculously expensive.

Barca know it was a panic signing by them after losing Neymar, but won't want to lose face by losing money on him.

Is dembele not LW?? I'm purely basing this from my knowledge of Pes 2018

Nah RW, he can play on the left also but he prefers to play in the right

Played a fair bit for Dortmund on LW and no.10 but I think his best work will be from the right.A classy player ,I wonder what Barca will do with both him and Malcolm.

I would much rather use rashford on the right than spend 100m on a player who imo doesnt justify that sort of transfer fee

If Dembele is hurt because he didn’t get a congratulatory message from his coach then I doubt very much he will be a Jose player. We already got rid of one of those ‘arm around the shoulder’ ex-Dortmund players already.

Now that Fred is in, it feels like United are waiting for something to fall their way. Like Sanchez.

Rather than forcing something, a clear focus on a player needed, they are waiting to take advantage of a situation.

The earlier window end has pushed up prices, with selling clubs aware they can ask for more with the short deadline for England but also sell to a club abroad after the deadline for premier league. Toby for example could still end up at Juve, Barca, Bayern or even Real.

United unwilling to pay the fees, wait for a moment where they hear of a player of quality they can't ignore becoming available.

Rashfors isnt good enough for RW,I've seen nothing from him there that would suggest he would solve the problem.

Dembele was way overpriced and if Barca were to sell it would be the same story. Can't see United paying anything close to that fee even if he was available.

In an ideal world, we'd go into the season with Bailly/Lindelof, and neither would miss a game.

When one does, and inevitable Bailly will miss a few weeks, or if Lindelof is out of form for a stretch, we are back to having one of the chuckle brothers back in. Heaven forbid both need to miss games. Plus, none of our five options seem to be much of a commander of the box.

We don't just need two CBs we trust, we could do with a more commanding centre back too to become our third trusted CB.

In an ideal world we would only need 11 players...

I say we should give our two recent and expensive signings their shot, you basically say that they could get injured or underperform? Well, so what? Harry Maguire could get injured or underperform, or some other guy could arrive and be the next Mangala. We might as well give a chance to the two guys we have already bought instead of rolling the dice yet again.

I also must say, I don't see why people have to roll out the "chuckle brothers" line when trying to run down Smalling and Jones. The first time I heard that phrase was before the Europa league final, it was good to see it made to look stupid then and its still stupid today. We have international defenders who have all at various times performed well for the club and yet you are concerned that they are not good enough to be 3rd/4th choice? In a world where our rivals have the likes of Lovren, Cahill, and Stones as first choice the concern seems a little unwarranted.

All things considered our center back options are perfectly fine, and I think I am right in pointing out that we have already bought two expensive centre backs who still haven't had a chance to create a good partnership. We would be far better served getting more from our 5 senior centre backs and focusing our transfer energies on the gaping ****ing holes to the left and right of them.

Imo a command centre back is needed because we don't have one.

Bailly and Lindelof should be fighting for the spot beside them, and then competing with them.

Smalling and Jones have long term proven themselves not good enough to lead the united defence.

They're not 3rd/4th choice though are they.

When I am positing that Bailly and Lindelof be give their chance as 1st choice, then thats exactly what Jones and Smalling are.

    But in reality they're not.

Jose has given no indication they even would be, but besides, one can't stay fit and the other has been piss poor. No matter which way you cut we need a quality centre half.

No, we don't, we are perfectly well stocked in the position.

Its going to be the narrative that Jones and Smalling and Rojo can't tie their own shoelaces, so be it, but I say that we already have better depth there than our rivals and it should be our lowest priority in this window.

I also must say, its strange that people demand Mourinho get more from the attacking unit but don't think he should be getting more from the five centre backs that he has.

CB is the strongest part of the squad by far imo. Sure every position can be upgraded but really the team is so weak and light in other areas that it seems bizarre to focus in the centre if defence.

There are some gaping holes in the staring 11 that badly need addressing. Also the manager and the players need to sort their shout and get themselves with some sort of cohesion and purpose.

I honestly think there’s a lot of work to be done and getting some personel in is only part of it. I’m unconvinced that a lot of these players will actually step up to take the team to the next level and I have may doubts about the managers methods and beliefs at this stage to be brave enough to make Utd a real force in the game.

Like the football and performances in last few seasons that have gone, there is an element of sleep walking in this transfer window that is just a little unnerving and depressing.

In two weeks time we may have to re-evaluate what we can realistically expect from the club going forward. Transfers aren’t the be all and end all but are certainly a statement of intent.

Dembele used to play for Rennes or St Etiane or whatever before Dortmund right? Was always highly rated.

I'd take him in a heartbeat

He would be a brilliant signing but no one is going to pay the fee Barca would want. They really did get taken to tbe cleaners last summer.
