I've just signed on to Jobseeker's Benefit and I'd like to apply for a medical card.

However I do have a some savings and I know the medical card is means tested.

Is there a limit to the amount of savings you can have?

    Hi Jackie .

    Info Here. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/health/medical_cards_and_gp_visit_cards/medical_card_means_test_under_70s.html

    Things to note

According to HSE's guidelines, if your income is derived solely from social welfare allowances or benefits or HSE allowances, you should be granted a medical card even though your payment may be in excess of the income guidelines for your age and situation.

All capital (savings and investments) is taken into account for medical card purposes. However, income from savings, investments or property of €36,000 for a single person or €72,000 for a couple is disregarded.

The value of your family home is not assessed.

For amounts over the disregard limits, interest is taken into account in the means test. A notional assessment of interest is used.

I found an online assessment form. I failed. I guess it's due to my savings. Oh well.

Don't forget that you may be eligible for the GP card.
