My wife and I are adopting two kittens. Brother & Sister.
They are about 4 months old.

Usually i work from home so in the majority of cases there will always be someone around the house.

However occasionally i have to travel and the wife may work a long day meaning the cats will be alone for 12-15 hours.

Any harm in this as long as they have access to food and water?

How about if we decided to go away for the weekend resulting in the cats being alone for 48 hours (the neighbours can stop over and make sure they are fed and watered)?

That shouldn't be a problem in my experience, have fostered kittens through 6-8 months old and raised them from 8 weeks to adulthood with a full-time job, being alone 12 hours as long as there's food, water and a clean catbox was fine. Confining them to a set of rooms works so they don't get into more mischief. They'll sleep most of the time

That's a bit much, I'd like someone to look in on them and play with them for awhile each day, and clean the catbox. Cat's really hate dirty catboxes.

I wouldnt mind leaving them for 48hrs when they are a bit older once they have a catflap and can come and go as they please - You will often not see them for 48 hrs anyway when they get older - I have had cats that go on holidays for up to a week - they dont even let you know there going!!!

Lol! My cat won't leave the house for even 10mins! She's clingy, but also 15.

But yeah, as kittens, should be ok for the day but anymore than that get someone to feed them and change the litter box, play for a little bit too.
As they get older they will entertain/annoy eachother.
