Yea I guess we don’t really know what has gone on behind the scenes as regards interviewing. It’s known that Matty Kenny was definetly interviewed and Brendan Cummins it seems aswell. There was talk of Fergal Hartley too but the one everyone seemed to think would get it was Sean Power but don’t know if he was even considered.

The biggest surprise for me is how quick the co board has acted on all this.

They knew months ago that a new manager would be required. Despite all the nonsense spouted on here and elsewhere there was only ever a couple of candidates. Nothing quick about it

They knew 20 years ago that Walsh park needed to be upgraded..

Can't imagine how the players would have a strong view on Pat Ryan one way or the other. As far as I know he hasn't worked with any of them. OK, players talk nowadays and maybe a few of the Waterford players have heard good reports of him from a few of the Cork players. But how that become "the players have got the man they wanted" is too much of a stretch for me.

Having said all that, he was highly highly regarded as a top class coach by the players during his short stint with Cork. So perhaps ye have pulled an ace from the pack by chance.

As you may know the selection committee were mandated to consult with the players reps and this was the man they wanted. Fact.

    New Manager
In this week's observer is a statement from co board that says that clubs have till Mon 15th @ 5.15 pm to submit the name of any suitable & available candidate.
How then have co board had time to meet , discuss available candidates, contact them to arrange interview & carry out interview , & meet again to agree best candidate , all within 3 days ?
What is the hurry , surly it makes sense to get the right candidate. ?

If Brian Cody showed up, and said "hey, ill do it for free" then i would understand not proceeding with more interviews and just take him.

But whats the rush with this guy? Whats the need to jump into it and not look at anyone else just because he has showed up?

Cody hadn't a big c/v when he got the job with kilkenny look at the way it turned out.

Heard yesterday Dalo was the man they wanted. Another fact!

Is it not possible there could be truth to both? In other words, I doubt out of 30 odd players, every single one unanimously wanted one specific guy. Surely there would’ve been a few who may have wanted Daly, some would’ve wanted Candidate X, a few who would’ve gone for Candidate Y etc.
So hence, you’ll get stories of “they wanted X” or “their preferred choice was Y”?

Ah here, you can't be applying logic on this forum! :D

If the decision has been made, so be it. The last two Cork managers we had worked out pretty well and if we get to watch hurling half as attractive as was played under Justin McCarthy that'll do me.

Still have to wait 5/6 long months to see

It won't be instant success and being in 1B might help us transition a bit. The Big games will be Dublin (improved a lot this year and will be even better next season) and Galway. We also play Laois, Carlow and Offaly. A loss to any of those 3 will be a disaster

One thing we know the championship structure won't change and we have another dog eat dog Munster

At least we will have more time over winter to prepare compared to last year

Waterford is probably the only top county that routinely gives the manager job to rookie managers now. Wouldn't happen in most counties or even most sports. It's handy for these guys to learn their trade with some top class players. Sean Power must be scratching his head.

This county board aren't fit to run a seniors five a side league.

In what way is Sean Power not a rookie manager?

What about Micheal Ryan and Eamon O Shea with Tipp or Micheal Donoghue or Kieran Kingston.

What intercounty management experience had they when they took over?

He has at least had success with the same group of players at underage level. If we are dishing out jobs to rookies we should at least be giving them to guys from our own county. Where are the guys above from and who are they managing? You just get the impression that nothing is ever going to change within Waterford because there is the same loser second place attitude towards everything.

Who was your choice for the job? Don't know much about Ryan assuming he gets the job, which is still an assumption but happy to at least give the man a chance first.

Kenny, who is also a 'rookie', would have been my choice above all that were mentioned including Daly, John Allen etc.

Just have a severe issue with the constant gripe with managers in Waterford. There's always some quarter who never give them a chance.

Heard that Pat Ryan is a nephew of one the Chairman's pals. If true then maybe that helped speed up the process......

I heard he's his estranged son. From myself, I made it up a minute ago.

But same surname, must be true.

A one point win for the ladies.

Full Time Waterford 1-11 Clare 0-12

Waterford grind out victory to reach All Ireland quarter finals. Massive performance from Beth Carton who scored 1-9. Well done girls and enjoy the trip back down home

He was involved with CIT in the fitzgibbon. Would have had Mikey Kearney anyway. Maybe a couple more?

Mattie Kenny interview was more of a token gesture I’d say. Pat Ryan apparently has been on the co boards radar for some time.

From what I hear the story about him being the players choice is nonsense. Maybe some of them but  couple players from my area are as surprised as anyone.

But maybe they’re outside the inner sanctum?!!

I wonder who will be part of his background team ??

At least Pat Ryan will have no club bias that people assume always exist happens when a local takes over. Really surprising pick tbh given prob nobody here heard of him

Nah that’s b*****s. I think it’s more a case that his name only came on the radar with the players after McGrath left, but the co board had him ear marked for some time, knowing it was going to be McGraths last year.

Some lads down here in Cork who pay attention to this sort of thing are very envious of us getting Pat Ryan. Reckon he's a very good choice and a player favourite in Cork, having been involved with clubs, colleges and inter-county. Only time will tell, but on the balance I think it's a good result for us to have a neutral manager given where we've been and where we need to go next.

I just hope the players are happy and they get to keep one of Dan or Eoin for a continuity of the existing culture.

Clean break for me. Not really sure what dan offers apart from a fashion throwback to 1985

Hearing the same myself from someone v involved in club and inter county in Cork. They said they had hoped he would have got the Cork job before Moyler.

Absolutely ,he went along with a highly negative game plan for five years ,just happy to be on the bus, he offered nothing from the line that I could see ,great player ,leave it at that

The players had massive time for him, was a great presence both on the line and in the dressing room. Particularly on the big days his experience was invaluable. Id be more inclined to believe their take on it rather than your view from the TV screen

Irish independent reporting that Paul Flynn and Fergal hartley are expected to be involved with Pat Ryan as manager

That is correct players had a lot of time for dan. Even with that said I would also be happy with a clean start. New backroom team also, fresh faces and fresh ideas.
