As pessimistic as I'm feeling about our preparation for the new season, seeing a line-up tweet does give me excitement.

Shaw is an interesting one. If there's any truth at all in the reports that he was offered to Everton last week, well that doesn't sound like a player Jose wants to keep hold of.

So, shop window for Shaw tonight or a chance to atone?

Looking forward to seeing Martial, I missed that smile.

The kit would be much nicer if it were black shorts and socks.

    Pereira playing cdm.

There was rumblings on reddit of Romero moving to #22 alright. Dalot must have wanted #20

    H/T

Joel and TFM on for Grant and Valencia.

    Looks 4-2-3-1
    Joel
    Shaw - Bailly-Smalling-TFM
    Herrera-Andreas
    Mitchell- McTominay-Mata
    Martial

    60min 1-0 down

    Martial off Chong on.

Mata goes false #9 and Chong goes right.

Edit: just noticed Darmian replaced Mitchell aswell at 60mins.

Shaw goes LM with Darmian LB.

    Greenwood replaces Shaw

90 seconds later Chong finds Herrera who hits the post and Mata scores the rebound.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,817 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Mata and McTominay (injured) off, Gomes and Tuanzebe on.

    4-3-3 with Chong-Greenwood-Gomes as the front 3!

Impressed with Chong. Darmian needs too go asap. Utter rubbish.

Sure, 3 weeks is loads of time when 6 months of prep time hasn't yielded the results needed.

That logic is full of holes.

What? Fred came out of the blue? He absolutely did not, we were strongly linked with him for months. Dalot was well speculated in the weeks before his signing too.

But seriously... Fred....out of the blue? Seriously?

    Pogba... Long running saga.
    Matic... Long running saga
    Lindelof... Plenty of speculation.
    Sanchez... Was a saga.
Lukaku bid came out of the blue to be fair.

I don't remember weeks of speculation for Dalot, I remember chatter a day or two before but that's it.

Same with Fred there was chatter but nothing concrete then he was signed outta the blue.

    Mikhitaryan, Bailly.

Sanchez was outta the blue, negotiations dragged on but there wasn't months of speculation.

The list gets longer if we go back and look at LVG signings.

Duncan Castles first broke the news about Dalot and within a day all major media outlets picked up the story. It was out of blue and no, it wasn't speculated for weeks.

Sanchez was first linked with ManUtd around Jan 10 and he completed signing by Jan 20th, if that's what you call as saga, then every single transfer is a saga.

Nice header from Herrera in the build-up to the goal. He was unlucky but seemed delighted to see his hombre pick up the rebound.

    Thoughts on last night.

Poor performances: Valencia, Herrera, Shaw, McTominay, Martial, Mitchell. Subs like Darmian had no impact.

    Good:

Pereira was the star man, I dont know why he was the deepest mid. He is like a Brazilian/Belgian Scholes, he can shoot, pass but he cannot tackle cleanly.

Chong was good when he came on. Want to see him start a game.

Smalling, thought his passing was good to be fair to him.

Other thoughts so far is Grant, Lee Grant, why was he signed. If Romero is leaving then fine, have him as backup. However I have always believed that your third choice GK should be a young lad.

McTominay I fear is overrated by many. I can only see him as a championship level player.

Pereira played almost all games as deeper midfield in last preseason too and then all the games as winger for Valencia. He looked good in midfield.

Still just first game though, it's just a friendly game to build fitness.

Joel and O'Hara supposed to be heading out on loan to get Senior football. We'd only have Fojticek/Kovar then to be third choice and they wouldn't be ready for that yet.

Did Henderson go out on loan again?

Nice one, will have to keep an eye on him so.

If they all go out on loan then it makes sense for Grant.

Also signing Lee Grant doesn't have any impact on squad slots. Joel Pereira won't count as U21 anymore, Dean Henderson would have but club did the right thing by sending him on loan and also same with Joel Pereira who is highly rated by various clubs.

Any chance we are not signing a rw is because Jose wants to ease Chong into the first team this season and sees him as a potential star?

Nearly 0 chance of Chong playing regularly.
I have plans to make him train the most possible times with us," Mourinho said. "Because that increases his evolution but he has to play where he belongs, he has to play in the academy and develop physically, because physically is where he is not ready.

"Technically he is very good, tactically he understands the game and he understands his position but by the physical point of view, but when the game gets into contact situations he is in trouble, he is fragile, he is still a kid.

But the talent is there, the personality is there, the passion to play, the humility to learn, so this is a fantastic experience for him. If he can play like today, 20 or 25 minutes in every one of these five matches and, if during the season he trains with us, and has a couple of occasions to play minutes with us, I don't know, depends, some cup matches.

"He is one of the good kids we have. It is not for today but for the tomorrow he is a good kid."

I don't mean playing regularly I mean easing into the first team as a sub and picking up the odd start.

Then it's the tricky part of do we hold off buying a quality player to allow him to develop.

Maybe an older player like Persic who while plays more on the left is two footed and done well on the right in the minimal time I saw in the world cup.

This is why I believe Willian to be a great accusation if we get him. Perfect stop gap for 2 seasons while we allow Chong to develop and bulk up

If we sign willian, martial rashford and lingard will see very little game time. I would rather sign a quality cb and lb instead

I don't follow the reserves as much these days but it seems like there is a very good crop of young players coming through.

O Connor is meant to be a huge talent is Jose thinking of a year or two down the line and persiting with young and Shaw.

I honestly think Mourinho all his career has been at clubs like Chelsea and Madrid where you cannot afford to trust youth as you are fired if you have a bad season.

I think with United he could be more open to blooding youngsters but it could be me thinking back to my football manager days of all the wonderkids.

The money in the game now especially in England means it is so difficult for young players to succeed at big clubs.

If the class of 92 were around today is it likely they would have all turned out to be first team regulars at united I have my doubts.

Martial and Rashford don't play on the right so it's irrelevant to them.

Lingard is a poor winger he is much better through the middle.

Williian signing should not affect them

Yeah that should be good. Sub appearance in few games and starts in cup games.

what you say is true - BUT....

right wing, or playing from the right wing, is probably the best chance any of them have of getting game time, whether it suits them or not.

In reality I don't understand why Sanchez isn't put out there, and play with either Martial/Rasford from the left but there is zero indication that Jose is looking to do that so no point talking about it.

Lingard through the middle will depend on how Jose sets up. I would have thought the intention is Fred/Pogba/Matic as a three, which again means right side is the only open spot for Lingard. Could go two from those three at times though, if Fred and Pogba (for example) will get through the defensive work still needed - freeing up a central spot for Lingard.
