Does anyone else feel that comparatively, average after tax salaries for a number of jobs across sectors appears to be lower than a lot of first world economies that are similiar to ours( to exclude scandanavian countries that generally use the tax to mitigate cost of living)?

I'm not sure. When I lived in Ireland I was able to save a lot, although this was before rents went insane.

Yes. A friend of mine just got a gig in the UK - her first full-time job - and will be doing *considerably* better with salary and cost of living compared to me or most people I know.

Where abouts, London is standalone compared to the rest of the UK when it comes to this

Cost of living in the UK is not *considerably* cheaper than Ireland.

Salaries in Ireland seem to top out considerably sooner than in the US, anyway, no doubt London too for finance and IT.

I think we are in line with Western Europe though.

I think it is, actually. Here's a comparison of Dublin to Manchester (acknowledging that London is extremely weird and hard to compare to).

    https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=United+Kingdom&country2=Ireland&city1=Manchester&city2=Dublin

Note the 96% higher rent prices and 16.9% lower purchasing power in Dublin.
