Used to listen a lot when Wooly and Ger were hosting it a lot.

I don't like Joe, far too clean cut and I dunno, there's just something strange about him.

Kilbane is just terrible. How on earth is he in there?

And I despise when I hear McIntyre come on...terrible voice and mannerisms like emphasising parts of words for no reason.

Harsh words, probably all deserved but my only question is how in sweet f*cking god has the Richie McCormack tosser not made your hitlist?

Yes, time to take on cretins outside RTE .

    This is brilliant

I wonder if the 'boil' insertion is a pun on OTB and their Boyle sports and bookies association

Best bit is the piss take on Smug Captains and their 'retro annual' at the end

Maybe they could do Paul Kimmage. Frothing at the mouth over everything/anything and cutting through all the bull**** with his shiny sword of truth. A 'writer' and a fighter!
    What a goy!

Bit of a tool, in my opinion

Just getting to The Papers today, always like listening to Dermot Gileece- forthright and with a wealth of knowledge and experience all tempered in an easy manner. He's a good counter balance to Kimmage.

I listened this week too. Not a huge golf fan so I skipped the first half hour. €10 for anyone who can guess what Kimmage was talking about.

Watching the show last night on the youtube channel, I was very surprised by Richie's demeanour. Sitting there in the corner, looking disinterested and bored, hands up to his face, wearing the ****tiest t-shirt he could find, interjecting with comments only when he saw an opportunity to slag off Joe Molloy with his "funny" comments. Seems like he's just going through the motions and doesn't have any real interest in the show.

A bit too cool for school you mean?

Having heard music where the football show should be for the last two nights, I'm assuming OTB is on its slimmed-down summer schedule...

Yeah. The week of two world cup semi finals and a final...they cut the football show.

Isn't he more interested in music than sport? When he still was on Twitter he certainly used to tweet about music much more than sport anyway.

Anyone giving out about Giles being past his sell by date (at I would have somewhat agreed based on his Thursday night football pieces on OTB) should take a listen to him on Dunphy's The Stand podcast. Absolute revelation - fully lucid, fully up to date with what's going on at the WC and no slipping into stories about the old days at Leeds.

Having listened to their semi finals preview pod last night, you would have to look at whatever it is in the Joe/Nathan/ Richie interview style for the problem. Or maybe it is him and he just cant relate to the younger journalists.

Anyway if you are a fan and want to hear him on top form, check out that podcast. Correctly tipped France too btw.

Yeah he hasn't lost a beat.

If he has the right handler/interviewer he is still a very engaging and insightful football man.

Giles is let down by his belief that the only way to play football is to have a central midfielder who takes the ball off the back 4 and everything has to come from there. He views all teams, games & players through this prism.

I am tired of hearing 'I don't beleive in tactics...you just take every game on it's mertis'

Also Giles does not do any research about world football he knows nothing of footballers beyond the Premier League and Champions League.
There were times he reveled in his lack of knowledge at world cups and laughed along with Dunphy.

As for picking France, he did NOT!
In an Evening Herald Piece I read before the world cup (14th June kept it with the wall cup chart).
    Giles picked Brazil!

Giles: "My head tells me this could be this could be a year of Redemption for Brazilian football"
With 'John Giles verdict Brazil' plastered on the page for emphasis!
He actually switched from Spain after thier manager was sacked.

Let's face it Giles is now like the kindly auld uncle at a wedding smiling, but ultimately out of place.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Picked France for the semi v Belgium obviously, it being a semi final preview pod.

Anyway I would probably not have disagreed with much of what you say if I was basing it on OTB Thursdays or the Herald. What was remarkable about him on Dunphy's pod was that he was totally different, like he had rediscovered his confidence. Was genuinely delighted to hear the legendary old pro back on form.

Right I will give it a chance to see if it changes my view as well.

In episode 192 (quarter finals chat) Giles called it for England against Sweden (who wouldn't), he reckoned Brazil would blast Belgium with both barrels, sided with Russia over Croatia and said France might just squeak a win over Uruguay.

In The Stand World Cup podcasts he's wedged in a few Don Revie and Leeds comparisons.

That's not to say I don't enjoy listening to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭EAFC_rdfl

Yeah likewise I would say overall its enjoyable enough listening to him on The Stand, but he still has his senior moments. Killian MBappe is M Babby to Giles! Dunphy even tried to explain it to him.

Incredible prediction from Gilesey there, so. He's back!

I also find it completely ridiculous that they cut the hour shorter, cutting off the football show, on the week of the world cup semi finals and final. The most important week in world football for four years !! But don't worry, that extra hour will be back in time for the charity shield in September.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

they're still talking about football and the WC though, so it makes f-ck all difference really.

I thought some posters in here would be pleased, given all they do is give out about OTB and their content these days.

an hour less each day for yis to be offended about Joe's social justice commentary, eh? ye'll have to find some other lefty, liberal outlet to get annoyed and rant about
use the hour off to get your blood pressure down maybe.

The interview with Roy Jones Jnr. was hilarious at the end. Joe laboured a point about cock fighting.
Roy pretty much told him to get his priorities right and hung up.
Apart from that it was a poor interview anyway. Joe out of his depth on boxing. Should get Andy Lee to do these interviews.
