Charger is about 600 euro installed. When you say you do not have a driveway, this could be a problem. Regarding the range I am not sure how much would that one do. maybe somebody here knows?

Since I have got my electric car, my expenses related to car dropped from about 250 p.m. to about 40 p.h. (130 km round trip daily)

He does not even have a designated parking space if I remember correctly!

Or frugal, reliable engine and that bad on the go.
    Dated design though

    They’re tiny in the back.

Yeah I know that's the biggest complaint but really it's only ever going to be my 13 month old back there in a car seat. My partner has a 2005 series 3 series which we'll change in about 2 years time to something a little more family orientated. So really I'm not too bothered with the lack of rear space.

True but it has a poor Euro ncap child occupant rating. The Panda was my initial choice until I started looking at Euro ncap ratings.

It is a very dated design alright so I think I'll pass. Plus it'd be my third Fiat in row!

You won’t like the Punto with it’s 0 star NCAP rating then :)

If I remember correctly the ncap was originally 5 when it came out but as the car never changed and the ncap changed criteria it then got a low score.
Or I've remembered that arse ways

Personally I'd look at either the i30 or ceed.
Wouldn't bother with the juke, they are horrible to drive and just ugly as sin.

Probably difficult to get insurance on being an import....... though yeah, it's right up my street.

What about that generation of Octavia?

Toyota Prius? Mileage is a bit above average but I wouldn't worry about that with a Prius:

Definitely not off the cards, just the mileage is a little high but you say it's nothing to be too concerned about so I could look at it.

What about that, have Peugeot improved since the days of the 407 or are they still to be avoided?

Oh these hunts were all so much easier when I was fixed on what I wanted/needed!

I like those 508s, they are good value but I'd prefer the less risky 2.0 HDi engine over the 1.6.

Right, I am taking note of all the opinions and help I'm getting. For tonight though I'm getting the stares so I'll have to leave it here.

Yep, the test got tougher. Panda probably did well first time round too.

Honda Jazz all the way, forget the others!

    Honda Jazz?

Someone else just recommended one. I don't know what preconception I had about them but just looked them up now on DoneDeal and it'd seem to fit the bill:

You also linked to a 2013 Nissan Note which originally was registered in the UK. Any preference between the two? Link above is for an auto, I'd wait to get a manual though.

That note is a newer model than the jazz don't have any experience with the note so can't comment the jazz is amazingly practical and usually reliable but I wud test one first i find them a bit rough

Why do you think 55km is diesel range?

    Diesel would be 100km+

    Is the 55km city driving?

If I was driving 55km to work, you can be sure I’d be buying a diesel. Where does the 100km figure come from?

It's 55km each way so over 100 km a day. It's a mixture of good back roads and then joining the M50 before Blanch and getting off at junction 7.

    Over 500km a week? Diesel.

Similar to me so. I do it in eGolf but that would be outside budget. The 26kWh eGolf, you could potentially do in Leaf but I would suggest having the ability to top up at work......

So is most of the driving in traffic? I would guess so if using M50/N3 etc?

IN that case hybrid will work better. PHEV or full electric will of course now reduce your toll costs as well at a maximum of 500 per year

Ahh the Irish love of daysel:P

The engine hasn't even heated up properly at 55km..... If it was 100km each way then yes diesel. 55km is still petrol/hybrid/electric country....

Also most of journey would be M50 traffic and city driving....terrible for diesel......

Most of the driving is actually on pretty quiet back roads. I take the R122 and head towards Ashbourne where I get onto the M2, then onto the M50 for a bit and then into Palmerstown.

A hybrid would be fine butt I suspect I'd find few in my price range and most will either be Japanese imports or older than I'd like.

Im on R121 :P the bit on the M50, you doing in rush hour?

I know the last time I hit M50 at 7.30 thinking I would be ok it was backed up that early:mad:

But it's min 2000km a month... Not sure what must be wrong with your car if the engine isn't up to full temp after 55km
Mine starts to heat up within the first 3/4km.
By all means go for petrol if you can absorb the costs without issue but I wouldn't.

You may join the masses and buy a cheap diesel. I would stay closer to the 6k price because the government will have to do something with diesel at next budget so expect more tax on it....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Philb76

The op is most definitely doing diesel mileage and his budget is 6 to 8thousand euro can electric plug in hybrid cars and so on be bought for that money

I'm listening to this claim every few weeks or months, usually by the EV brigade who have become the new motoring equivalent of vegans. We get it, you like EVs but not everyone has to. Yet there is nothing to suggest that any additional punitive diesel taxes will be introduced in the short to mid term and being honest it would be political suicide for any Government or political party to adopt such a policy due to the number of voters who drive diesel cars.

Also don't be under any disillusion that PHEV/EV drivers are some how going to continue driving their cars on the cheap. The motorist is a constant stream of revenue in this country and as ICE vehicles eventually dwindle and disappear through natural progression to other methods of propulsion you can be sure new forms of taxation will be introduced to balance the Revenue books.

Now rather than ruining another thread by veering off into another EV v diesel discussion lets get back on track. I'm sure the OP will post a thread in the EV forum if he wants EV advice.
