So selling a player after three years for the same price you bought then could actually equate to a 30% loss in value.

But you got three years service from the player, which is why the club record players as depreciating assets over the course of their contracts.

Schneiderlain was sold at the start of his peak years. Memphis was sold with his peak years ahead of him. In terms of potential the teams buying both were going to get the best years of these players.

I know inflation isn’t the only factor but in the case of those players we sold at a loss probably because we wanted them sold and couldn’t negotiate a better fee. In the past united Would get nice fees for squad players , particularly with former players (now managers) willing to pay big money.

Yeah, lets build our formation around that, a solid basis for a title challenge right there.

You are totally ignoring de gea, bailly, lindelof, young, valencia

Young - not good enough for the formation - doesn't offer width, cuts inside on to his right too much.
    Bailly - unproven.
    Lindelof - unproven.
Valencia - not an offensive threat down the right, attacks die with him too often.

    We have issues at fullback.

I agree. We are nowhere near matching city this season and it looks like at the moment liverpool are ahead of us as well. Problem is when you say stuff like that you are classed a city supporter etc

When you see city getting that sort of money for a keeper, utd are dead right to hold out for decent money for blind and darmian

Not getting involved with the Blind and Darmian debate but that's interesting money for Gunn.

He's definitely tipped as one of the next big things in keeping but it is a lot more than I thought he'd go for. He's just finished his first year starting as a pro.

Have Southampton bought him as a starter and will sell Forster I wonder? But he will still have McCarthy as competition. It's a lot for a back-up keeper.

I know I'm bias but a little Southampton have pursued Gunn and paid that price, while West Brom in the Championship got Johnstone for £6.5m. Gunn is younger (22, 25) and had more years left on his contract but find it interesting that a PL club was willing to pay more for him, and that Johnstone ended up staying in Championship despite being a more proven keeper.

Definitely can see that happening. Can't imagine Southampton would splash that cash on Gunn, and extend McCarthy's contract to 2022 if they were not open to selling Forster.

And surely Liverpool will be interested in him.

Forster has been terrible for a long time now, if anything he'd be dropping down a division I'd say if he was to leave.

"Tuttosport reckon Alex Sandro price now down to €35-40m, could be more tempting for Man United."

Steal at that fee, sell darmian and blind and we come close to covering that fee!

I dont agree with those suggesting we sign maguire, we need someone with more experience to build a spine at the back

Wouldnt say its a steal, he was poor enough last season but an upgrade no doubt

Yes. If we are going to the bother of signing a CB, then go all out for a top one and let the rest fight to earn a spot beside him and as backup. McGuire might be marginally better than one or two we already have, but that's not enough for me.
Any signings from here on need to be first team starters, enough squad level players at the club.

yep, buy first team and turn the current first team players into squad players accordingly - if they don't like, well.... they can be replaced (or we can fail to sell them and they can sit on their bumper contracts til they leave on a free!)

United in for some other young lad from Porto.

    https://twitter.com/Sport_Witness/status/1016683350055145472

    Afonso Sousa

Apparently a year left on his contract - moved agents recently (from my reading of it) - his agent is now Deco.

United and Barcelona linked with the kid (amongst others) so loads of Deco narrative to play with. At Porto and Chelsea with Jose, played for Barcelona too.

I would assume the kid has a low release fee, given his age and the fact his contract is running down. Might be another Dalot.

Also, some 14 year old I hadn't head of til today was included in the u18/U23 training camp - shows United have big hopes for him. Know nothig about him, never seen him etc - seemingly a forward player. The next Messi I assume.

Really hope Chong has a good pre-season (if he goes, seems likely), not only does he play RW but also puts Fellaini's hair to shame.

    Look at that...it's glorious.

Always wondered would this be very aero dynamic?

Like obviously it's not going to effect him that much but surely it has some effect with perspiration or something like that and having to carry it around ha.

I like to think it was the sole reason he won the Jimmy Murphy youth player of the year award last season. If more grew it like that we'd be back to winning ways.

Also himself and Gomes will be fun to watch at pre-season but heavily tipped to be "ones to watch". Like I said earlier, feels like that has been said about Gomes for donkeys now!

Gomes has been known about for a while but realistically he is still very young so I'd be surprised if he was anywhere near the first team this year. Maybe chong will be considering where he plays but again I'd imagine a loan spell will be a decent option for him.
