Bad enough it’s a sluggish/slow diesel Mondeo but hubcaps/steel wheels on a roads policing car?

Who ever purchased that vehicle should be the one arrested.

The 2.3/2.5l petrol versions of this car would give most of the diesel BMW and Audi’s used by the criminals a run for their money.

Perhaps the purpose of the vehicle is not for high speed chase? Have you considered that maybe it isn't a one size fits all when they buy cars?

Don't see steel wheels impacting anything if the tyres are up for it.

Isn't that a 200PS Mondeo? Seems adequate for a roads policing car.

What benefit would expensive alloys make to a car that’s probably going to have a hard life and the alloys would be in bits?

This was involved iirc in a chase in Borrisoleigh back in March. Have a photo of it somewhere. It had traffic Corp livery then.

Wasn’t as embarrassing as the Hyundai that came struggling behind it to be fair.

Firstly, not all traffic cars are for high speed chases so there is no point buying all high performance cars but that cars is 200 bhp which is quite reasonable to be fair.

I wouldn’t really agree with you there. What has basically happened is cars have evolved. If the Gardai were rocking 1.5 TDCI Mondeos they would be comparable to the i40. The model the Gardai get is the basic version of the engine, there is a 139bhp version too but they didn’t spec it.

How much of Garda time do you think is spent chasing joyriders in M3s though,
To be fair they have a few higher power cars, they got 20 195bhp Insignas a few years ago.

If they have sirens and flashing lights they should be expected to be fast and high performance like they are in other countries. They could be called to a situation at any time

You know that in the UK they use Hyundai’s too?

Everything has a cost, even though the BMWs would be heavily discounted, they cost an awful lot more to maintain.

UK police use Corsas and Fiestas too.

If anything we need more cars rather than better cars.

Is there a performance impact running with steel wheels?

If not, I can't see why anyone would give two shoites about the guards driving a car with hubcaps

UK use to be big on Volvo's as they are some serious sleeper machines.

They use Opel/Vauxhall and likes of Hyundai for their panda cars.

They have some really serious machines for specialist units.

Always loved watching road wars and their Vauxhall omegas and then the other series with impreza and Evo etc.

Up north they have golf r's and some other serious kit.

Had to get out of the way of an unmarked i40 a while back, so I accelerated into a gap in the slow lane. The i40 took a fair while to pass me out..

Accept that cop cars don't need to be very fast, but 170bhp for diesels should be a minimum to be reasonably quick. That's an old 320d...

You need sub 9 seconds to be able to make progress....

I can't remember the last time I saw a police car speeding or showing blue lights.

Down here they're normally stuck in a verge or layby with the cop hanging over the roof with the 'speed gun'.

Sirens on the Q7 and beemers are shockingly low.
Very difficult to hear or tell direction they are coming from.

Sirens on mark 3 mondeos probably one of the best we ever had ....

The 1.8 petrol mk3 mondeo was one of the best regular petrol cars we've had here.
Comfy, good handling, cornering, acceleration and braking.. not forgetting, incredibly reliable.

It must be a good month now since we've had a "give the Gardai all 530d's" thread. I was worrying we weren't going to have another one.

I'd love to see the figures or running a full fleet of 530d's versus i40s in terms of purchase price, maintenance, repairs and fuel consumption. Then we could have people come on here to say the boom is back in force, that the government is spunking our money away on a premium Garda fleet, a fleet that can't even be fully utilised.

Steel wheels are fitted as they're not as delicate as alloys are when they've to drive flat out over potholes around Nenagh.

I suspect OPs motoring knowledge isn't as high as they think as that's a 2.2 200hp Mondeo.

It’s a 2.2litre Diesel. Like everything in this country it’s just a glorified tractor compared to what the criminal element of this country uses. The car to my knowledge never sees action outside of the Thurles area. Mainly used on the M8 motorway.

There is or was a similar 12-D mondeo in Nenagh surprisingly with alloys.

It can be a little misleading though as you would expect it to have the wheels.

It's only since the Hyundai i30 1st came with the alloys then it was found they were too soft and cracking quite often.
Also the i30 are very low and can't fit the anpr system.
