Can't get a job but also can't get J.S.A

I turned 20 last week and things are looking very down in terms of money. I did terribly in the Leaving Cert (got 20 points) and went to a further education institute but due to health reasons, I had to leave this January.

I've been looking for any minimum wage job but I think my lack of any job experience puts employers off when they look at my CV.

I was thinking of singing up for J.S.A but I need my parents payslips and they refuse to give them. Things aren't going well at home at all and this is compounding the problem I have

    What do I do?

    > What do I do?

    Hi there

I'm 40, and I've been around the block a few times.

Forget about your Leaving Cert. But you need to get an education. I understand you quit further education due to health reasons, but is there any way you can sort out these health reasons and return to education?

You are 20. You have your entire life ahead of you. Your life will be so much easier if you can manage to scrape a degree, or at least, a 2 or 3 year diploma, or some sort of apprenticeship.

    What are you interested in?

Are you good with your hands?

I'm happy to do a Skype call with you if you want to talk about this sort of thing in detail.

Education is the way to go lots of options, first you mentioned health issues if you need a bit of support NLN are the place to look into they offer learning support and lots of practical work based theory and recognized qualifications. Local ETB would also be able to give advice. Solas would also be an option.

An alternative would be an apprenticeship earn and learn. The other options may give access to payments but depends on circumstances. Make an appointment at citizens advice excellent service they would be able to direct you.

Best of luck dont worry about leaving cert. Mind your health and head its tough when you are looking ahead and not sure of the road, remember the trick is too keep moving forward. Best of luck

20 points? Did you spell your name wrong!!!

Seriously you need to get some sort of education. I work in manufacturing and we look for a minimum of a leaving cert to take people on. Plenty of jobs atm but you need something behind you.

JSA is not the answer and I kind of agree with you folks. Take control and sort your life.

Go back and repeat leaving cert would be my advice. Plenty of places do it and you have basics covered.

If you left education for health reasons you cannot claim JSA. You’ll need to go your doctor and get an MC1 form for illness benefit. You won’t qualify for illness benefit but you take this form to the CWO and apply for SWA. You’ll then need to submit MC2 forms to the CWO weekly.

I'm sorry to sound like a dick but how in the hell do you only get 20 points on the leaving cert?

Doesn't repeating the LC cost loads of money? I would be up for it but my principal said there was only one college that did repeats but when I phoned them, they said they were no longer doing it

How come? I technically did the LC but obviously got terrible marks. Does that count as leaving education?

20 points means you probably didn't turn up for most of your exams. Go back to school now.

Turned up for all of them but completely blanked out and didn't write anything.

I'm just wondering, is there a school that isn't fee paying?

Not really but it's manageable. I just feel demotivated with no job, no computer, phone, and at home.

I don't know where you're based OP but there are schools all over the country that take repeat LC students. Not sure if there are fees involved but they'd be fairly minimal anyway. The school I went to had about 500 students at any given time and at least 100 were repeats

My advice ( Take it or Leave it )

You need to get to the root cause with your motivation or Health and speak to your GP.

20 point in the leaving Cert

    Dropped out of Education

    Wanting to Sign on.

Im not being harsh here so dont take it that way.

I think you need to reflect on the past to make positive changes in the future.

Thats why I think you should go to either a GP or a Councillor for advice.

Did you try talking to local secondary schools. When I was in LC we had a girl in her 20s join us and do 5th year and lc exams with us as she had underperformed years earlier and wanted to do it again.

Sort it out, and redo the LC, otherwise any exam/interview will be the same.

If you are willing to work there are building sites and contractors up and down the country that are desperate for casual labour.

All you need to do is get a safepass card and you should have no problem finding work.

The best thing is to definitely go back and try the LC again but if thats not an option or you don't feel like you are up to it the above is your best starting place, from there you can train in a trade

Out of Dublin? I'd be willing to relocate but currently have €0 for anything. Would have to stay with someone.
