    Hi 1983ish,

In the same position as you . Looking to upgrade Minix box

How do you find the shield?

    Thanks
    Sponsorgate

Well worth it, what a bit of kit the shield is. I watched a couple of the 30/40 minute nvidia shield setup videos on YouTube and had it up and running in no time. It’s different to an android box, everything has to be sideloaded thru es file explorer or similar. You really need an airmouse for setup, I used the minix a2.
Bbc and itv players that came embedded on the box didn’t work, I had to disable them and sideload them which worked.
Tv app repo is a handy app for adding sideloaded apps to the homescreen.
I’m just using it for streaming atm but the gaming app looks good, I’ll mess around with that when the dark evenings set in!
Even though I got a few years out of the minix box it’s annoying that it won’t update so I consider buying the shield future proofing

My bbc player and itv player worked fine after I updated them
    Seems strange yours didn’t work

You can "cast" games from your PC to the Shield if you have a particular graphics card range.

You can pay for Geforce Now and stream a selection of games over the internet.

You can play Android games and some Shield specific Android games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2

You can also vast through Steam, regardless of the GPU

Geforce Now is currently free for about 55 games to stream which is great. The game selection is mostly old titles but there are a couple of games worth playing in there.

I'm using Parsec with Paperspace on the Shield :)

Full on Gaming Rig with a P4000 GPU, Runs PUBG great and works great on the Shield.

Currently setting it up to work with Synergy so I can use my Laptop as a remote keyboard and mouse for my cloud gaming machine.

Google around for a code to get 10$ free credit, works out around 7 a month for the storage and 40 cents an hour for gaming.

Very handy as I can just use my games in steam and I don't need to go off and buy a mad gaming rig as I don't play games very often.

Got rid of three Minix boxes and replaced them with 2 X Shields and 1 X https://www.mi.com/en/mibox

The Shields are amazing but in terms of value for money it's hard to beat the Mi Box IMHO as its less than half the price of the Shield especially if you aren't going to be gaming. Both run Android TV and both have Netflix/YouTube HD etc. although the Shield has Prime built in but the Mi doesn't.

I run a full IPTV service on all three and can't see any difference in performance.

I'd say the Shield will continue to have better support long term than the Mi but for €70 if I get 2-3 years out of it before upgrading again I'll be more than happy.

I would not recommend a Mi box - very limited box, poor user options, no Ethernet connection, only one USB connection, terrible picture quality and more.... From my experience, it's either the Shield or a new Minix - by far and away the best performing and most user friendly boxes on the market, nothing else comes close.

The Shield and Mi Box have identical picture quality. I've taken screenshots with ADB on both, overlayed and compared them. Zero difference.

The Shield is much more powerful but does no image enhancement / upscaling.

I wouldn't touch anything without AndroidTV, regardless how strong the spec of the Minix is...

MiBox is working flawlessly for me - from BBC and Netflix to Mame emulation with XBox Controller. I have sound equipment plugged in with optical cable, no issues there either. I also don't know what you mean by terrible picture quality.

I'm interested in hearing more about your MAME setup for the box.

Have you ever used a Mi Box?

I have 2 x Shields and 1 X Mi Box and there is zero difference in picture quality that I can see.

Yes the Mi is more limited in terms of connectivity but my requirement for the TV it's connected to was to have a box with good WiFi capability and a USB connection for a 1TB USB drive to use for downloaded content. The Mi box works perfectly in this scenario, it has amazing WiFi which was a concern for me coming from Minix boxes which had external Wifi antenna and it streams IPTV in full HD flawlessly. I couldn't be happier with the Mi Box and thats coming from someone who loves the Shield and has two of them!!

I also like my MiBox. I would say however if you turn the MiBox up to 4k in the Android settings you start to have problems, the video comes out of sync with the audio. I've factory reset a couple of times and this still occurs, so while it says it's a 4k box, I really think it's a 1080p box. Which to be honest is perfect for the vast majority of people and content. The shield can take whatever settings you throw at it. But again not sure I even notice the difference in resolutions, but only have a 55 inch 4k tv. Perhaps at larger sizes there is a legit issue.

Mi Box is great but as mentioned above I def wouldn't be using it for 4k content. For 1080p its perfect, its a bargain at under €60.

Still following this thread but bought a Minix U-9 h on Amazon and after 6 months with it bought a second one this week.

Netflix, Amazon, Rte Player etc no problem.
Allows offfline dowload of Netflix. Can customize and skin it. Installs neary all apps form play store. Ethernet connection on it.
    Running Plex too.
Also bought a satellite box from satellite forum so can access all my recordings from it using the minix or stream tv using dream player app.
It's expensive but solid once set up correctly.Really like ability to access my hd recordings in rooms I have no Ethernet or satellite points. Can download the file from satellite box to minix if I think it will stutter over WiFi.

Just started playing with this. Is there a way to shut down your machine from parsec or you have to go tp paperspace to shut it down? How does the nvidia controller work through parsec?
    Currently using a p4000 to play bfme2 from 2009 on a mac. It's deadly!

Seems to be mostly cosmetic but only played with it for a few minute's.

De-cluttering of the home screen is a nice positive; a lot of the other features seem more related to Google voice which i dont use
