Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Thanks Edd!

And wow I had no idea there was a limited run of Flashback for the Switch!

Was there a Kickstarter to fund it or something?

    I don't think so I got it via Amazon.de

The lead designer for the original, Paul Cuisset, gave the game to French publisher Microids to release it on the Switch as part of the 25th anniversary of the game (well, the console release anyway. The original Amiga version was released in 1992, 26 years ago).
40,000 copies of the Collector's Edition were made and it's also available digitally for €20 (C.E. is €40)
It's a very decent remaster, with the core gameplay untouched and all the little enchancements you'd expect (filters, save-states etc.). You can play it two different ways: Original or New. Original lets you play it as it was in its original form, and New lets you play it with fast-forward/rewind enabled and save-states turned on. From what I've played so far I can safely say this is the definitive version of Flashback. The soundtrack has also been remastered (by choice, you can switch between that and the original SFX/music) and I personally think it sounds class.
I love this game so much.

I'd probably like to get it, but €20 is too much for a remaster of a >25-year-old game.

You can be certain it'll go on sale often. It seems the type of game. Then again every game you buy you get reward points for the eShop, I always find it handy if I'm stuck a couple of bob for a game.

40 for a collectors edition is a bit of a bargain though!

Is it? I have no idea. I was getting that thing whether it was 40 or 100 :pac:

The value may shoot up though in a few years considering it's in limited quantity

We'll compared to collectors editions on PS4 or Xbox One, they can go from 60 or 70 euro and upwards!

Any new game is 70, add some DLC pass to it and suddenly the 'collector's edition' is €100 with barely any physical stuff, if any. Sad state of gaming these days unfortunately, every game has a season pass etc. Usually a steel book case and DLC that anyone could buy on the store. Nothing exclusive. Red Dead Redemption 2 collector's pack doesn't even have the game.

It wasnt even that long ago you'd get good stuff, I have Alan Wake on 360 which comes with a small hardback novel, extra DVD and soundtrack. The box is even shaped like a book. Same with Forza 2, comes with a book on how to race as well as in depth info on some of the cars. Picked these up in my CeX days so whenever we took stuff in I got first dibs on it.

You should see the Gran Turismo 5 kit I have. USB key, metal keyring, genuine leather wallet etc. I don't even have a PS3 but when it came through in CeX I grabbed it for about €35.

I know the likes of Doom for example came with a statue, but I'm more of an artwork and soundtrack kind of guy.

it's an oscilloscope :) They're still in use nowadays, although more modern versions
This one came from my dad's stack of electronics. He got a pile of stuff off his work when they started renewing all their equipment. These were going into the bin so he took them

Stick an audio cable into it and it would be great for seeing the audio waveforms when you're making your own synthesizer patches!

Scopes are awesome, definitely one of the best (and most complicated !!) pieces of kit for when you're messing about with electronics of any description.
Don't have to spend a fortune on one either to get started.

They used to build them into some hi-fis back in the day, my dream piece of audio equipment when I build a proper entertainment centre in my own place:

Not really a get, more a make.
I 3D printed a bunch of these Banzai Bills and other bits and pieces for prizes for a kids party the other day. These were fairly popular as you can unscrew the base and store some sweets in them(which is what we did). They're about the size of a can of coke, maybe a little bigger.

I managed to keep one for myself :)

    Retro related.

Just took delivery of a Ryo Hazuki's jacket that I had custom commissioned by some crowd in China (I assume) made to my measurements.

The fit is a bit tight and it doesn't sit very well on me with the jacket opened but it's still pretty awesome.

Cost me €100 and it's made out of faux leather.

I won't be wearing it too much and might use it as part of a Cosplay for this year's Dublin Comic Con.

    Pretty impressed with it though.

    35288691_247813272651549_5168632127259934720_n.jpg

It's much better than one I took delivery of last month:

    34837152_10216810582879687_1771623290331201536_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=bbfef364a7b79ceaa6b6435ce9522b21&oe=5BAF06C5

Material on this one was some kind of faux suede, the colours were all wrong and it didn't fit very well. I didn't spend as much on this one though and came to regret it.

Thankfully I was able to forward it on to a fellow local Shenmue nutcase.

Here's the latest arrivals this week. I have one more package on the way but this should be the last of them for a while. Need to put some extra money into savings first.

Shaq Fu isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I know it can be gotten cheaper but it was a bit of an impulse/novelty buy. All games are complete. Unfortunately Virtua Tennis and Tony Hawk's are quite battered, the cases were listed as being 5-6/10, but I reckon they got worse in transit as they were shipped fairly loose in a reused envelope.

Prepare to be very pleased indeed.
Certainly the PS more easily applied transparency effects and well supported software libraries results in most of these games looking much better on the PS than the poor old Saturn.
The Sat could do some great things, but needed talented hands to bring them forth, Quake for example.

Could you not have swapped out the audio files for the right ones?
Kept the file names, but swap Cold Storage for Leftfield, something like that?

They played off the CD and the game wouldn't let you swap music mid game. This was also 1998 when it was much more difficult to pirate music!

@MrVestek you're probably happy with what you have now but an alternative would be to find yourself a brown leather jacket you like and are happy with (I don't know if there's still a plethora of leather jacket shops on Liffey St... Unique / Hairy Legs etc) and take it along with the badges you want made to Diffney on Mary St. Upstairs they have a stitching / branding service that specialises in branding workwear and sportswear. Would be able to do you whatever you want I'm sure.

Another way would be to pick up a jacket in a 2nd hand shop/charity shop/Eager Beaver etc and just do some painting.
Nothing there that couldn't easily be painted on, and it might look pretty good.
Not a fan of the franchise though, so waaaay too much effort for me!
Maybe Ollie can have a crack at it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,242 ✭✭✭MrVestek

I mean... I wanted a jacket that looks exactly like the one in the game down to the very last detail and this one definitely does.

Besides the patches and tiger logo on the back are practically impossible to get by themselves.

So yeah the new jacket cost me just over €100 but I'm happy with it.

My last arrivals for a while (I *might* get a Bandridge switch, Saturn/Dreamcast RGB cables and Saturn Action Replay but that's it!)

House of the Dead probably isn't worth anything with a spine card but it's nice to have. I'd like a Pal copy but can't justify paying €80, especially considering HotD2 is much better. HotD2 was practically free due to a £5 voucher.
I love the aesthetic of Japanese :)

I was up in Limit Break games in Drogheda today.
Nice place, a good selection of modern and retro stuff at reasonable prices, nothing for me today though, aside from a new power supply for my N64.

Be interested to know your thoughts on House of the Dead on the Saturn. Is it as disappointing as some reviewers have suggested?

The only home version I've played is the PC port, which is actually just a rapid-fire point and click exercise.

I had both the Saturn and PC version of it 10 years ago, I don't remember any issues with them but as I said I prefer the sequal so didn't put much time into them. Stupidly sold off my Sega collection shortly after!

Once I get an Action Replay I'll give it a run through :)

There's a few vertical grips for the Switch on Thingiverse. Might 3D print one and see how useful they are.
Printed in ABS or more likely PETG and it'd be plenty strong.
