Emoloyees abusing sick pay policy

The company I work for has an extremely generous sick pay policy. However this is abused time and time again by a sizeable number of employees. Leading to numerous issues operationally and also the morale of the staff who have to cover.

Just curious if other posters experience or have experienced this in their work places and how widespread it is. For those who have worked abroad - would you consider it an 'Irish' issue?

UK public sector. It's here too, so not just an Irish thing.

Not just the public sector. There are always people who will abuse any system. Worked with someone once who was guaranteed to use a sick day once one became available again, if you follow.

Most employees either private or public use guaranteed sick days as holidays. We have all ours at my discretion (in contract)

Simply not paying them for ringing sick on a Monday when X thing they into happened on Sunday knocks that **** on the head.

I worked with a lad one time and the boss went to check something on the calendar in his office and he had all his sick days marked in ahead of time.... Didn't take a sick day for the following 2 years after that. ( I think we had 5 or 7 uncertified)
