Makes you wonder is this to bolster AIL or concerned with current academy locks.

He was excellent for Terenure this season.

Forgot Marty Moore, really wondering will he have as much impact as management thought with Kane/O'Toole progressing.
If the academy forwards can be rotated for meaningful game time, we looking set for the future, with things only gonna improve. Back row is actually gonna be very competitive next season.
LHP really is the issue, this must be make or break for Sullivan & O'hagan this season.

The few times I saw him play for Wasps last season were not promising. He is far removed from the Marty Moore who played a pivotal squad role from the bench in the 2014 6Ns.

That said a move and a fresh start could be just what he needs. He clearly has the ability.

Is Rodney still here next season?

That's my fear also, wasn't starting for Wasps. Hope he doesn't turn into another Ah You!

If he can manage his fitness he'll get back to previous levels I think. He was injured as he left for wasps and picked up a couple injuries over there too.

Yeah, if he's fit at the start of the season and looks in decent nick in whatever early fixtures he features in then there is a lot to get excited about. He's a quality tighthead who deserved his international call up at the time.

Who is likely to make international honours for Ulster next season? Moore might make a case for himself with good early form but who else?

    Best
    Henderson
    Treadwell?
    Herring
    Murhpy
    Cooney
    McPhillips?
    Stockdale

Anyone else? McCloskey probably needs injuries to at least two others before he's back in a training camp with Ireland going by the last two years. Marshall is out for most of the season from what I recall? McPhillips is a bit of a hail Mary call but he was quality at the tail end of last season and I wouldn't rule him out of stepping up further.

Treadwell suffered from 2nd season syndrome up to the last 5 or 6 games when he started playing like he did the year before. He is a massive but athletic man and with the right coach / ing could add substantially to our 2row roster. He is still quite young. 22 y.o. 198 cms and 118 kgs. He has already made 44 appearances and - let's be frank- he has been playing in a largely dispirited and appallingly badly coached side until Les left.

Our new full back / centre, Addison, might get a training squad call up I suppose unless he arrives like most Ulster signings with a massive potentially career ending injury.....:D.

I hope it's 2nd season syndrome he suffered from and not 2nd row syndrome

God help us if McPhillips and Cooney are called up at the same time!

Can’t see anyone else bar Addison being called up unless there’s an injury crisis given as it’s a WC year next season and caps are not going to be thrown away. Schmidt probably has about 90% of his squad in his mind already.

After the WC we could see a host of young guys get opportunities if they develop so it’s not all bad especially if they get a baptism of fire this year.

On the turn side of this if your first choice half back pairing are of international quality (with one of the best international sides in the world) it augers well for your team in crunch fixtures.

I don't see anyone else. Matthew Rea at a push if he continues where he left off before injury, but the back row is congested and in a WC year I dont see much room for experimentation.

    Henderson
    Murphy
    Cooney

Maybe Addison, that will be it.

Seems Ulster actually had some decent coach’s applying for the top job. Steve Borthwick had applied also.

    Scarlets Racing Leicester Ulster.

    Thoughts?

Borthwick would have been a good call I suspect.

I'm more interested in Perpignan's trip to Galway...

Not necessarily. Scarletts have lost a few key players this season and Racing have always been a bit half hearted in the pool stages. I think you can win your home games if the injuries are kept to a minimum and if MacFarland is on board in the next few weeks.

On the turn side - I'm not sure if it's worth caring about Europe this year, focus on the league and try and put yourselves in a good position like Leinster did in the 2015 season.

Could be worse I guess! Racing rarely travel well, Scarlets have lost players and Leicester have never enjoyed Belfast! Leicester and racing will be a big challenge away from home!

New season new issues! We used play hoping our forwards could atleast make parity with other teams! Then relying on our backline to win us th match! That looks long way off next season!

Truely is weird thinking our forwards have more potebtial than our backs next season! Something I thought I’d never say or see!

Ulster won't get through but absolutely no reason they can't win all their home games in that pool with their first choice team next season. The other three will not be thrilled whatsoever at getting a trip to Belfast as their 4th seed encounter.

Pretty sure Leicester have had their worst European defeats in Belfast.

I don't completely agree with Best's logic here. Scotland have their replacement, they are holding onto MacFarland and demanding a massive sum for his release. Ireland leaking this information is a message that we are prepared to wait and Scotland need to be more reasonable with the price tag.

MacFarland will be here within a few weeks, the IRFU are just trying to manage the cost to buy him out and Scotland are possibly playing silly buggers.

Exactly this. Scotland won’t want McFarland until January as that will involve paying him months of gardening leave or risk him spending time wirking with his replacement (which is dangerous enough as Scotland are in Ireland’s WC group!).
