Re-size a coat?

My good coat has become too big for me. I absolutely love it and still wear it even though I look like a weirdo in it. It used to be my smart coat. The material is thick. Can a coat be taken in? I know a good dress maker whom I've seen do wonders with all sorts of outfits, but never with such think material. Just wondering…

i have an alpaca coat which i had taken in two sizes so yes it can be done
