RTE News report from the opening of the new dual carriageway between Whitehall and Santry, which was later extended to the Airport and all became the original stretch of the M1. Since then, this has been downgraded as a result of the Port Tunnel works to single carriageway, and became the N1 and later a spur of the N50.

Interesting how the Chief City Engineer of the time was disappointed that the dual carriageway couldn't be carried in further as far as the port, however as we know now that has since been achieved via the Port Tunnel (probably not what he had in mind).

Shame they downgraded that bit. Looks like a nice piece of road. Can you imagine the bullying at the end of the 2 lane section that would occur nowadays
