Short-notice scheduling of bail applications.

Two men who were charged with aggravated burglary and assault earlier this year are currently remanded in custody.

The complainants, who I know personally, were informed by gardaí just a few hours before the defendants appeared in the District Court for a bail application, which turned out to be unsuccessful. The gardaí themselves were informed of the scheduling of the bail application at the last minute.

Why would the Courts Service schedule a bail application hearing at such short notice?

I didn't say it was literally at the last minute!

Wouldn't the Court Service have told the gardaí about the bail applications as soon as the applications were made by the defendants' lawyers?

Bail applications are always organised at short notice. You have a constitutional right to liberty; denying you your liberty is a serious matter; when you apply for a bail hearing you get an early date.

SFAIK the court service doesn't tell the guards about a bail application; the lawyers making the application do. When the court fixes a date for the hearing, it notifies both sides.
