Vat on used item from USA

    Hi Guys,

    Just curious do you have to pay full vat on a second hand used item ?. The item concerned is a boardgame from ebay. It was originally sold @ €130 ,but because of limited availability prices are up to $300 for a used copy.

    Stuff from the States may require payment of import duties as well as VAT, if the item is not exempt.

    However, the few used items I've bought on eBay from USA (laptops approx used value $70) never attracted either.

    Yes, absent any exemptions, used items are liable for VAT and customs duty at their fair market value. A game with an FMV of $300 (plus shipping charges, which are also subject) would exceed the threshold for both VAT (€22) and customs duty (€150). That said, there's no guarantee you'll actually be charged anything; I've received packages with properly declared values above the thresholds that I wasn't charged anything for. No idea what percentage of packages actually get inspected and assessed, though, so I'd count on having to pay if I were you.
