    This was about two things.
    • Healthcare equality - allowing women bodily autonomy like men
    • Abortion - allowing women access to abortion
It was not about "babies" or "points scoring".
The RCC made it about them when they told people to vote no and the people didnt listen. They then made the SVP waste money moving their collection bin from a church ground.

One realisation I've made in this campaign, as a recently reaffirmed atheist, is that the only religion making any logical sense or speaking in favour of women's rights, was Islam. Which shocked me. Given that in a lot of countries where Islam is the majority religion, women have no rights at all.

When your indigenous religion (RCC) is less tolerant of women's rights than Islam, you have a problem IMO.

It was about women’s health and oppression to the vast majority. It was about religion to the others because the RCC says it’s bad at this particular moment in time. Then others it was about controlling women. Then some more controlling women to the detriment of the health and even life because of a foetus. To a few it was solely about abortion as most has the aforementioned reasons behind their ideals.

It was a kick in the balls to te RCC because they put so much effort into getting the referendum passed in 1983.

However, you want to dance in circles again. The dance is over, the lights have come on.

Again, we do not have democratic control, this is a serious misunderstanding of many in society

Anyone any idea when these ICBR people are shipping back to wherever they came from?
They were at Heuston station this morning, the scumbags.

You're quite right this is the beginning. The beginning of the end.

After the resounding, emphatic yes vote a week ago, only the most delusional people in this country would see it otherwise.

I think Wanderers point is that things can change quite quickly against you just when you think you've won. History is littered with periods where countries (even the world) pretty much regressed, sometimes for short periods of years and other times for centuries (you could easily argue that Southern Europe in 100AD was a better more progressive society to live in than it was by 1300AD, thats a regressive period of over a millennium).

We don't live centuries ago. Back then communication could be impossible at times. With only 21% of the electorate voting No, this is safe for the future. The chance of Ireland regressing is miniscule.

Agree, but I'd go a little further, a lot of my thinking on institutional power and control ultimately comes from Chomskys work, of course I could be overthinking this particular matter, but....

So are we being governed by the wizard of oz?

What happened this day last week, when the majority of people voted for something and that vote of the majority got implemented ?

History has shown repeatedly, how societies can swing from left to right or right to left in a short space of time. All you need is the right set of conditions and timing.

Societies rarely swing from left to right. Show me an example from the last 200 years, where religion was not involved.

Swings don't really happen when the population is highly educated and they have more access to information.

If it happens I will donate €100 to the Santa Strike Force, like we are all awaiting an outlaw to do at the moment :D

This thread is actually hilarious at this stage.
The Yes side complains that No siders won't respond or post on the thread.
The odd No sider attempts it.
They are subjected to immature attacks like the one below.
They stop bothering to post on the thread.
The Yes sides start complaining again that No siders won't post.
And you wonder why most No siders don't bother?

    Haha.
    You're funny.
You most certainly did not vote yes.
We are done with the no side. They can go away now, just like they did after the divorce referendum, the SSM marriage referendum, when contraception was brought in, etc etc ad infinitum.
You cannot block progress and civil liberty.

We're witnessing a swing to the social left at the moment in Ireland so it does happen that way.

Have you read the news today old boy?
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh...... as we have moved to the 21st century and given women their autonomy.

As I said, immature posts like this are pretty much the reason the thread has died and become little more than a Yes side circle jerk that most No siders wouldn't touch with the longest of barge poles. :)

Meh, we were told that about the original 4 threads as well. The No voters wouldn't touch them apparently for bullying or something, and we were to wait to see the results on the day of voting to see how out-of-touch with reality the threads actually were.

They complained about being outnumbered here too even though they only register as 21% of the total electorate and even less of the total number of people eligible to register to vote.

Looks like Iona didn’t come to save them.

I actually find the circle jerk idea funny. If you look at the No sides posts the same posters thank most of them regardless of what they say. Mind all those babies you are killing there guys!

They're just trying to create a narrative that they're being silenced. Never mind the fact that opposing and even ridiculing other people's ideas doesn't amount to silencing them.

No, but at the same time ridiculing people's posts and acting hysterical and immature so often does not encourage discussion.
