Octavia VRs 2.0 diesel. Not a very lovable engine compared to the V6s above.

    Still a lovable engine though.

Entry level diesel from 2006 v entry level petrol from 2018 in the same model. A valid comparison IMO.

...... and in diesel FYI ..
    Tipo 1.6 95bhp diesel 42mpg
    500L 1.3 diesel 50mpg
    Focus 1.5 diesel 50mpg
    Kuga 2.0d 2WD 45 mpg
Fabia 1.4 tdi  55 ish mpg

I'd have had all of these for at least a week iirc, some for a month or so.

I have a Focus 1.5 diesel and I consistently get 60mpg (4.7 l per 100km) - 80km daily commute consists of about 40km motorway, 40km N roads and 20km local country roads and city roads.

The period I had it for was Cork to Kildare return on the motorway and 3 Kildare to Dublin return trips with 3 adults and a week's luggage.

So maybe 500km motorway and 150km non motorway, driven sedately too.

I gave it back full so if it wasn't completely full when I picked it up there could well be upto 10% extra on the 50mpg so maybe 53/54mpg :)

You are going off the dash read out ?
    40 + 40 + 20 doesn't sum to 80 btw :pac:

4.9 is brilliant economy, more modern cr diesels are barely getting those figures. It shows how much the largely ignored ( for decades) petrol engine has progressed.

No, I am finding it a rather grumbly lump. It has enough power, but is not particularly pleasant to use.

I've never checked before but below is my journey details from this mornings commute.

Mainly motorway driving with climate control turn on the whole time. The difference in time is due to dropping the kids off at the creche. 2l 3 Series by the way

I have a 1L petrol. I was struggling to get anything lower than 5.8L on motorway journeys, but that was in the winter. My fuel economy has increased a fair bit in the warmer weather.

I don't normally drive on motorways but on the N4 I can get as low as 5.5L.

I'd say 6 is a good number alright.

Thanks all! And Thanks Davey that's a nice direct one for me!

Looks like I've a few tips I'll summarise here:

-Tyres - make sure they're not in 'comfort mode'
-Don't drive too fast, air resistance
-Might take a few thousand KMs to loosen up
    -Climate control turn it off
-Summer is better for economy than winter.

Been given some pretty good targets here! Gonna see what I can get out of her on the next trip!

    ............
    -Climate control turn it off..............

    I'd leave it on.
Why buy a new car and try and save the <0.1 litre / 100kms on energy costs to run climate control?

Last Summer, I did a long (4000 km) mostly motorway trip in Europe in a Citroen C4 HDI. Over the whole trip I averaged 4.4 km/100l. I was delighted with that result.

My recently recharged aircon was on full blast all of the time.

I'm averaging about 3.5 l/100km (81 MPG) with my 2012 Prius (:rolleyes:) Plug-in, and that's with about 40% driving in EV mode (charging at home). Basically I'm filling it about as often as my previous car (406 HDi), except that had a 70 litre tank and this is only 45. My running costs are about half.

That's pretty much 4-pot diesels in a nutshell. I'm never going back :) Couldn't go back to a manual for a daily driver either, I don't know how most of this nation puts up with that nonsense...

    Try a 1.0L Picanto - I'm in 5th by 50! :pac:

Thanks again all, I reset the average fuel consumption and Killbarrack to Banbridge without the cruise control (as I found out I'm not meant to be using it for the first 1000KMs) was 4.8L/100Kms. I've got a few more Kms on the car now so maybe it's loosening up. I also didn't have the wife in the car but I'm going to resist saying that to her! :pac:

About 58 miles per gallon is a bit more where I expected the car to be pottering up the motorway so happy out, certainly better than the old 500.
