Sitting in traffic today, I noticed about 99% of other drivers had their windows down and were quite obviously under pressure from the heat. Most of these were new well equipped cars so it got me wondering as to why people don't use the air-con?

Is it a case of "jaysus my daysul will be drunk" and not turning it on, or is it simply a case of blissful ignorance, about not knowing that you need your windows closed for air-con to work it's magic?

A big mistake I see is people with aircon on full blast AND the windows down.

It's odd, I noticed this too, they are either thick or tight. The mank that goes in to your car too in heavy traffic from having the windows open is disgusting too.

Perhaps the RSA could do a new ad on it to educate people :D

A lot of people I know don't realise that windows should be closed when the air con is on!

    No aircon in mine. :(

Step out of the car drenched after each journey these days.

To get the air con working to temperature you have to close all your windows and bake until it cools the car. Sometimes on a short journey I won’t bother.

I know I know I know you will say it only takes so long and then it’s worth it or my car is instantaneous but some people just arnt that bothered.

They need to think of it as leaving the door open on a fridge and letting all the valuable cold air out, go basic first :D

It might be the case that said drivers were stuck in stuffy offices all day and wanted to grab any actual warm outside air they could.. given its a once in a year event!

+1 on the traffic air being manky though

My aircon was a god send today. I drive about 45 mins each way to work and this evening I had an extra bit to go. I arrived at my destination with goosebumps and feeling a little chilly. I have had my local BMW specialist texting me aircon offers too, it must be a great way to boost the coffers at a time which is traditionally quiet due to holidays and such.

I remember seeing an experiment to show the effects of using air-con on fuel consumption. It showed that because of the drag caused from having a cars widows open while the air-con was off, the fuel savings vs having the air-con on were negligible.

I use it all year round! (well i did until it stopped due to low pressure, have a leak somewhere... being killed the last few days...) .

When I lived in NZ I could pick up any old car for pennies and it would be guaranteed to have proper aircon. I'm in a bangernomics now and only two of my windows actually go down and I've a tape deck for entertainment.

Is there anywhere around the midlands who does this. There used to be a lad in Athlone a few years back who did it, but he's gone bang.
Can anyone recommend someone in the general Athlone and/ or surrounding areas?
    Thanks.

My 161 passat aircon has packed it in. Nothing but warm air out of it. Almost due a service and I'm hoping main dealer will look at it under warranty.

I was enjoying my aircon today.

Didn't see any impact on the car's efficiency.

People are just to stingy to use it, sure go on and sign up for a 3 year pcp to get the chaepe tax but by god don't turn on that aircon or else she'll start guzzling the daysul.

I use the climate control almost all year round.
In the winter its great at keeping the mositure level at a min and in the humidity of last few days its a godsend.

Finally some warm weather, and you expect people to sit inside cold car.

I normally use aircon, but today all my climate control was off, and all windows open. Just because I could finally feel some warm breeze.

If it gets above 30 deg - I'll turn on my aircon.

I drive with the windows down in good weather because I've got a straight six, and the warmer weather is the excuse I need to hear more of the engine:D!

The only exception to this is at motorway speeds, there's so much road noise because of the open windows so then I'll put them up and use the a/c instead. In the winter I have the a/c on whenever the windows start misting up.

A/C is the biz, my current 'shopping trolley' is the first to have it and I'm now thinking only in terms of aircon when it comes to my next car.

I can be somewhat guilty of this, but i'm aware of what i'm doing. You'd be amazed by how many people have no idea how aircon works or what buttons do what and why. Most drivers see red for heat, blue for cold; they may not even have the aircon turned on. Or are too stingy to turn it on.

I like a combination of either the sunroof open with the aircon directed at me on a low fan setting to keep cool its its 22*C+ outside. Sometimes the same with the window open. Any colder and the aircon is off. Funnily enough in Autumn/Winter/Spring its never off.

That really depends on the amount of solar gain, temperatures and speed.

Air conditioning isn't perfect - even with it, the surfaces inside the vehicle can be scalding hot on a summer day.

    Who needs a radio?! :cool::cool:

I considered upgrading my radio way back until I realised that I hardly ever turn it on. Sure why would I when I've got a naturally aspirated straight six as a soundtrack. In any way warm weather it's front windows down, rear windows fully out and radio off:cool:!

I'm not sure if E36s have it, but E46s have an airmix in the centre vents. It's fantastic because it allows you to decide how hot you'd like the air coming out of the face vents to be (but still keeps the overall cabin at the temperature you've requested on the climate control), so it's possible to drive with the windows down in colder weather and stay perfectly warm:D!
