Anyone get the email about Shield getting Android O?

They've given me a free 3 month plex pass if anyone wants it.

    I can't use it as I've a yearly sub.

They're on Amazon Warehouse deals too, listed as "used" for 143.90stg

Used most prob means that the box has been opened at some point, but the shield itself was probably never even taken out of the box.

It is listed as "Large cosmetic imperfections on the front bezels. Item will come in original packaging. Packaging will be damaged.".

I had bad experiences with Amazon Warehouse before. They send out some real junk, swore I'd never use it again. I know you can return items, but it's still a hassle.

Yep, it's one of the best gaming apps out there. Totally worth paying for IMO

Can't get it to work over a local network with Windows 10. Infuriating.

Shared folders / Samba? It's all the modern Windows 10 security features getting in the way. There's several settings to set to get it working.

I'll try dig out the exact steps.

As far as I recall you can't set up passwordless sharing anymore, or to do so takes jumping through many hoops.

The below will set up read / write access to a folder on Windows 10 (with latest service packs)

Windows features, turn on SMB 1.0 server
    Network profile should be private
Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > New user > User name: Visitor, tick Password never expires, set a password

Choose your folder to share, right click > Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing. Share this folder. Permissions > Add "Visitor" user and give full control
Back to the folder Security tab, add the "Visitor" user and give full control.

On Android, using Kodi for example > Add a video source > Add network location > smb:///192.169.x.x/sharename. Fill in username and password and save for this path.

    Should work!

I will take that if you still have it.

Edit: Scratch that, I got the email. Thanks

Something im wondering if someone could possibly tell me is there any difference in Samsung smart tv (ks7000) Netflix and the Nvidia Shield Netflix?

Cant seem to find any full answer to this online.

I don't believe so, the only difference I've ever noticed in my shield and Samsung smart tv Netflix is that I can use voice search for titles on the shield.

    Hardly earth shattering tbh.

Yes. Better, richer colours from the Samsung app. Can't remember now but HDMI can't do a certain colour range so the Shield can't output those colours. HDR might be better from the app too.

Of all things, watch Peppa Pig played through Netflix on the Shield and then on the TV app. I noticed a big difference.

Really? With all the raving over its streaming capabilities I taught it would have the better quality!

Can't overcome the limitations of HDMI I'm afraid....

For Plex though its better as has a more powerful prosessor than the TV

That would be a major thing for me I'd use netflix a lot more.

Some Samsung's can't handle 4k processing on Netflix. Don't even ask me which models but could be something else

Any crashing issues ect with saving games to external usb?

I've only just started DL games but running low on space, so will need to start using external memory.

Adopt the storage, then it behaves identical to internal storage

I have a minix x8 that I got great use out of for the past 3 years. It’s stuck on kitkat 4.4 though and can’t update, I can’t even use my vpn sub on it as even that’s not supported below 5.0
So I bit the bullet and bought a shield on amazon!!!
Looking forward to seeing what it can do.
I’m not really a gamer it’s more for streaming so any advice welcome.
    Thanks

    Nice, just ordered.

Caved and bought another myself. My justification being by the time I sell the controller and my Mi Box it'll only have cost around €60 to upgrade :o.

Plus, gamestream & retrox in another room. Can't complain about that.

Not as good as above, but it is currently £176 on Amazon

I had 2 Minix boxs and both were good but the Shield is big jump ahead of them imo.Well worth the cash and if you don't plan on gaming sell the keypad.

Got rid of three Minix boxes and replaced them with 2 X Shields and 1 X https://www.mi.com/en/mibox

The Shields are amazing but in terms of value for money it's hard to beat the Mi Box IMHO as its less than half the price of the Shield especially if you aren't going to be gaming. Both run Android TV and both have Netflix/YouTube HD etc. although the Shield has Prime built in but the Mi doesn't.

I run a full IPTV service on all three and can't see any difference in performance.

I'd say the Shield will continue to have better support long term than the Mi but for €70 if I get 2-3 years out of it before upgrading again I'll be more than happy.
