Aeropress - tips & tricks

    I just collected an Aeropress from Parcel Motel, along with a stainless filter for it. It came with the paper filters too.

    Just wondering if any seasoned users can pass along any tips or tricks they have to get the best out of it.

    What's the best grind for example.

    I already use at home an Espresso Machine, French Press and Moka Pot, and I receive 3FE coffee beans monthly.

    One question I have is, is it normal for water to leak through the grounds as soon as it goes in to the chamber, right into the cup. Before pressing the tube in.

    A little can leak through. If a lot of water is leaking through your grind isn't fine enough or you should dose more coffee.

    OK, the grind is definitely fine, the actual Aeropress instructions say to use Espresso grind, which I have been using, which I understand maybe too fine for best results.

    I also used a "heaping" measure, as instructed in the pamphlet.

    I'd say about 15-20% of the water leaked out while I was stirring for ten seconds, then I started to compress.

    The coffee has been pretty nice though.

    Just keep experimenting with it.


    It can take a while to find your own style and what works best for your taste.


    You won't go too far wrong starting off with something like 3fe's brew guide and then play around from there.

    Something else I've tried is looking at the recipes from entrants from the aeropress brewing championships and then again tweak/play with them.

    I find it best to use it upside down, ie put the plunger in part way, stand the whole thing on the plunger, put in coffee and water, stir, then screw the filter in and upend over your cup.

    Once the cap with filter are on I press down gently to get any remaining air out, then upend over cup.

    For myself, time from pouring in hot water to starting pressing into cup is approx 2min 20sec.

    Have always used paper filter

    Have read of different types of metal disc filter & that the less fine ones frequently dribble during brewing

    For a cleaner cup I tend to use 2 papers. Also brew inverted but total time is 2mins.
