I've given up on a forum I've contributed in for several years due to the biased moderation in an abortion thread.
Mod is pro choice and that has been reflected in his actions.

I remember someone many moons ago telling me self congratulations is no congratulations.

If you want to really see how successful moderation on this site is take a gander at the Politics Cafe forum.
Hell you might be the only viewer/poster in there and you might actually see a thread that has been updated today.

Glad I seen this. I said something once when I had a few beers on me and the reply I got from one of the mods was enough to put me off drinking for life.

AH would have turned into a nuclear wasteland if not for the mega thread.
    Without a doubt

Depends on your viewpoint really. If all you care about is a tidy AH front page then thats a valid outlook.

Mine is that you need to see if you are reflective of society somewhat. Like it or not its on every outlet in real world and there's no point at all in posting on the megathread unless you can post at high numbers.

A victory for moderation ? In the tactical sense of holding up the dam maybe but not in terms of facilitating.

    Successful moderation?

Saw an example of the ban hammer today for continuing an agreeable conversation (mod didn't like the pro-life tone to the humour and ignored the pro-choice poster... pro-lifer got a ban for continuing the conversation, pro-choicer (with the same amount of posts) did not... balanced modding indeed... definitely no bias there, nope.

Good luck with that, the place would be shilled and brigaded to bits

Turn it around ; do you think that the level of debate in the megathread meets any standard ? To me its just like people shouting ; theres no point entering.

Lol isn't that essentially what the referendum has turned into?

    It even happened here;
One complains about modding, another comes in to counter... thread gets derailed by these 'master debaters'

Fcuk that. I'm fed up of listening to it, hearing about it on TV, reading it in the papers.
Social media is a warped echo chamber with nut jobs from either side having to ensure they always have the last word.

Fcuk this referendum. I cannot WAIT till it's over.

I couldn't care less though, I'm just happy that it stays there instead of having 50 more threads like it.

I have sympathy for people for people who feel aggrieved but I've seen enough from the whole debate elsewhere on the net to be happy to be able to stay out of it on one site at least

I don’t know what’s going on within the 8th thread but the rest of the place is indeed largely safe from that crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,352 ✭✭✭trellheim

Sure; depends on what you want AH to be .

    Without a doubt

    Look at Reddit Ireland

They abandoned the megathread and its just pro choice crap everywhere. No more random fun stuff until you dig right down

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

It was the absolute state of reddit that inspired me to make this thread

Having one thread with everyone shouting is vastly preferable to 20 threads....with everyone shouting.

If we remove the ban on these extra threads people will be setting up shouting threads willy nilly with casual abandon rather than take precautions to avoid arguments from developing beyond the twelve post milestone, let people continue to travel to other sites to end their arguments!!!

That thread is a disgrace. Loads of people of a certain persuasion shouting down anyone with a different persuasion, and fcuk all been done about it.
I’ve followed it throughout and have typed out numerous posts but just ended up deleting.
    (Sponsorship)Money talks I suppose.

I don’t know, I think it’s a hard one to moderate, unless you use a software algorithm. I don’t particularly blame the mods, I do think there is a lack of ideological diversity in the mod camp though, in certain forums.

Do mods here nominate other members to become mods? That’s how it worked when I used to mod a couple of specialist forums. Usually a clear record of impartiality and fairness was a prerequisite in the nomination process. But I can see how easily a ‘closed shop’ can develop when social and policy issues are debated.

Dunno what some people are gonna do when it's all over that thread has a new post everytime you refresh boards ffs.

To be totally honest I'm more then likely not even voting im sick of the whole thing being everywhere I look in person and online. Friday won't even be the end of it no matter what side wins it will only get worse.

On the eve of the referendum the thread reads like a prochoice chat room. With posters 30:1 in favour of repeal (in a country with maybe a 60:40 split?).

Come on, the moderation of the thread has been nothing short of a disgrace. Impartiality almost nonexistent.

Too many Pat Kennys in the current AH mod team and not near enough Miriams.

I’m not sure what your point is here? The ratio is the ratio. (though I have no idea if the 30:1 thing is correct) Boards skews yes apparently and if the Yes/No on boards was 60:40, the no voter contingent would be much more visible on threads, because 40% is not a small minority. There are just a lot more Yes voter forum members and, this being a messageboard, they are posting things. As one is wont to do on a messageboard. What part does moderation have to play in that imbalance? Both yes and no voters have been threadbanned. There are just more yes people about. You can’t moderate for that.

Also, Pat Kenny was sweet as fuck as a moderator. Gave everyone equal time, unlike Claire Byrne. He certainly interrupted Maria Steen but that’s because she was running over her allotted time. It had to be done. Fair is fair. He didn’t allow her to steamroll everyone. Good for him. If the Yes side ran over their allotted time, you wouldn’t be one bit happy. Comparing boards.ie moderators to Pat Kenny is a massive compliment to them. He’s been excellent.

The bias for yes has been extraordinary from the get go hardly impartial. Like thejournal. Mods etc all hardcore yes heads.

    Mod-Banned

On a messageboard, people post about their stance. That’s not bias, that’s people... talking about their stance.

Actually a few mods seem on the fence. And some, though not in AH are no voters. I can think of one off the top of my head.

As for the journal, well, many media outlets lean one way or another.
