Router and Switch set up with Eir

Hi,

Can anyone tell me will the attached set up work? What kind of switch will I need? is it managed or unmanaged?

Yes that will work. Plug and play. The switch does not need to be managed. Probably best to go gigabit for future proofing and the price differential between 100Mb and 1000Mb is negligible.

I can recommend the TP Link TL-SG1005D unmanaged switches
I've been running two 5 port switches for the last few years with no issues .

I was worried I would have no internet access from the items connected tothe switch.

How do they obtain an internal IP address? I would have assumed the eir router would only give the switch an IP and the switch would then have to assign IP's

The router will assign an IP to each device attached to the switch. I could try to explain to you why it works but you'd probably get a better explanation from Wikipedia!

They are assigned IP addresses by the router .
The router won't even notice that you have an unmanaged switch on the network .
