I am looking for places to eat in Kilkenny near nowlan park before a match. Somewhere decent that would accommodate a small group booking

Are you going to walk to Nowlan Park after food? Otherwise if you are prepared to drive after food, maybe somewhere like Langtons at Cillin Hill.

Let's not be getting carried away here. Sandwiches and flasks of tea out of the boot have served us all well over the years.

They have to be hang sandwiches wraped in enough tinfoil to cover a pig!

Barack Obama Plaza. Inject a bit of class into proceedings. :D

OP, How big is your group?

Langtons is huge and is well able to cope with big groups and bookings. Doubt if they (or anyone else) would be willing to box off a large section on match day though, unless you could give them gurantees of attendees and spend. Match days are their busiest day after all.

Park Inn across the road used to serve crisps, and maybe crinkly cheese sandwiches. I remember getting free sandwiches in O'Loughlins one day where Dublin teams had pleasure of being beaten twice; in club challenge and hurling league, Think they felt sorry for us ....

If the weather is nice, the terrace at the River court hotel is hard to beat.
