I'm sure there'll be plenty of GAA in the coming months. Football and Rugby winding up then and the Championship getting in to full swing.
I'll probably unsubscribe at the end of this month as I've no interest in GAA.

    World Cup, man!

Who among us hasn't threatened to kill women in our lives? A charming figure of speech!

Not a day goes by where I don't threaten to kill a woman

It's up there with this nonsence about gender being on a spectrum when ALL science proves that there are two genders. Peoples feelings do not trump scientific facts no matter how upset that makes them feel.
    .

    That's incorrect.

"ALL science proves"...sounds like the start of a phrase from trump himself. Of course there are two genders but there are babies born on the spectrum all the time. It's not even that rare, for example, babies are sometimes born without male/female parts or with male parts but unable to produce testosterone etc etc. There are loads of scenarios...medical intervention is required to place that person on a female / male path into adulthood but sometimes that can be very difficult. In the old days they declared all babies in that scenario women because it was easier to manage. Not all adults who feel they're not the right gender are mentally unstable. You could go through that process and feel they assigned you the wrong gender.

I actually chatted to a lawyer in the IAAF a few years ago about it and they accept that is the medical background, the fact that it so regularly occurs is what worries them in the first place. They're trying to make sure events are an even playing field in as fair a way as possible. It's not about mentally unhinged men getting sex changes to win the women's 400 metres.

But the question remains - If a male transitions to a female, should they be permitted to take part in the womens category?

To me the answer is no as it will ruin womens sport.

Its a question that requires a huge amount of conversation and scientific studies to first determine the exact reasons as to why men who transition have an unfair advantage (or just men in general). Once that is done, then the IAAF can go about identifying how to categorize trans people in sport whether that be within the current gender divisions or creating a new or several new divisions which are inclusive. The reasons for having a male/female division was clear and obvious when it was introduced. There's no reason why we cannot change it now if studies suggest we should. I don't think it's a simple yes/no question.

Hi can you link me to the scientific study that states that gender is on this "spectrum" you talk about.

This whole thing about people being born with both sex organs seems like a bit of a moot point. How often does that actually happen?

It's the story of a man who became one of the haves, having been one of the have nots.

That interview with Eamon Magee was something else, just bizarre. I felt very uncomfortable with the stuff he had to say about the allegations against him with regards domestic violence. Very interesting character, but quite a piece of work.... Would be fairly confident in saying he was after few as well during the interview.

Well said. It's naive, almost childlike, to think that there are two genders that are clearly defined. This is not even specific to humans, gender is fluid and unclear in other animals too. A lot of people don't comprehend this, it's a lot easier to have a black and white view of the world. Solving this for elite sports is very hard.

In all other walks of life it makes no difference to me and good luck to anyone with whatever gender identity they end up in. However, you don't need a bunch of studies to show that at the elite sports level a male athlete who is an "also ran" would crush the world record for the women's equivalent event.

I'm just looking at the Irish athletics 2018 stats and the lad placed at 20th in the table for top 800m results with a time of 1:55.73 where as the 1st female managed a time of 2:03.30. The 20th placed female had a time of 2:19.23.

In a sport where milliseconds can and should separate the competitors of each event its crazy to just say "ah lets throw it all in the mixer there and whoever wins, wins".

The athlete they had on had gone the other way and I commend him for that as he must be an exceptional athlete to overcome the natural advantages that he did not get.

Again please link me to the scientific study that says gender is fluid. That's all I ask. Some proof, not your feelings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,220 ✭✭✭jones

Totally agree with the above that's why i dont buy this gender is fluid thing in relation to sport...outside of sport i couldn't care what anyone gets up to. Each to their own and all that.

Same. If people want to call themselves sie, zir, banana. I don't care. Mixing men in women in sports is not good for anyone except justifying someones feelings. Its bad for men, it's bad for women, its bad for sports. There are countless examples of men dominating womens sports now that they're allowed compete because of how they think there was a mixup in their gender at birth - it's utterly insane. That's the context we're talking in here. If anyone believes that gender is fluid, knock yourself out, there's also people out there who believe the earth is flat.

    Can we move on folks?

On a different note, but related to the thread in question - wonder if they will cover the test match at all? Big news in the cricket world, and would be a perfect topic that they cover so well...
