Just by coincidence I see UK Gold have started repeats of "Are you being served"

That's an entire term of "gender studies" material right there.

    Wouldn't that simply be Sociology

Yes, and there are all kinds of subcategories in Sociology. Gender studies is often studied as a Masters as are other subcategories. And within the sociology field, clearly some academics specialise in certain areas, hence being a Professor of Subcategory.

I don't really what's wrong with there being no hard right answers either. The grey areas are interesting. I studied a hard science and it's a worthy subject but I don't really understand why hard sciences are so vaunted and why humanities are so looked down upon by so many.

TBH, you seem determined to indoctrinate you daughters in another way. Think my way or else. Mad. If you teach them critical thinking skills, they still might not agree with all your views.

I wonder if Mr. Humphries would have drawn the same flak for that comment?

    .

I'd imagine it's the lack of defense... I studied Business Management and Motivational theory for teams after I got my Finance degree. Now, most of Business theory could be considered to be "soft", and difficult to prove, since so many of their assumptions are based on Psychology which has it's own issues to proving their research. However... We are supposed to be critical of Business theory. It's taken out of the classroom, applied in the real world and analysed to determine its effectiveness. It's held up and examined against so many layers of inspection from equality issues right through to time management.

Personally, while I'm interested in the whole area of Gender studies, it doesn't allow itself to be criticized. Any suggestion of critical thinking is shot down as sexism. There is no higher level of inspection beyond the "researchers" aka lecturers of Gender studies, and experts who come from Feminist movements or companies with a direct link to women's rights movements.

With Humanities, TBH, I'd consider there to be a degree of snobbery. Examination of principles in these areas, with criticism beyond the accepted manner tend to be met with "you just don't understand it".

    Horse walks into a bar.
Barman asks "Why the long face"
Horse sues Barman for offensive comment.
    Horse now owns Bar.
Barman suing me for not using term "Bartender"

That joke wasn't even offensive, period.

Oh god, you said period. That'd offend her too

Bar'tender' implies that the person involved is a 'tender' or 'gentle' person, such traits often ascribed to females.

I think you should check yourself and use the less problematic Pub-Person.

I have been instructed by my gender neutral solicitor to restrict all future communications to the words "no" and "comment" in that precise order.

Can't feel too bad for someone who went to a conference with gender studies professors at it.

For balance here’s a right wing administrator and “free speech fan” at Duke who gets not one but two barista fired from an on campus coffee shop because an “inappropriate” rap sing was playing when he was queuing. He’s gets into an argument with the serving barista (who has no control over the music). She’s black by the way.

+1 It's an enormous area of scientific interest, unfortunately as you say it's become "women's studies" and with a large percentage of politicised thought attached to it. It's essentially become a feminist course/field. And it's a pity.

Has it not always been a feminist course/field?

The problem is as long as people bow down and apologise - it gives them ammo and validity.

REFUSE to apologise, thats the only way to beat this, then others will follow.

    I agree..

Find at least 1 illiberal to offend every day.
Remind them that being offended is a choice
Let them know that you don't care that they've chosen to be offended
    Then offend them again.

If we all keep doing this maybe they'll eventually get the message and **** off with their PC bolloxology.

Last week, Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president of student affairs, stopped into his regular coffee shop in the student center, Joe Van Gogh, for a hot tea and a vegan muffin.

.......That's a brilliant way of introducing a humourless ****er right there...

I'd love to know if there has ever, anywhere in the world, been a case of someone coming in for a breakfast roll or a bacon sangich to get offended by whatever music was playing.

My guess would be a firm no

Meanwhile back in the real world, it's quite a nice evening out there and I might even pop into the beer garden for a quick one or two on the way home.

    Where's the balance?

All I see is a man arrogant with his position. I could point you at plenty of those of both genders, especially when we reach the levels of expensive Higher education, or "the Arts". I'm confused, as how that balances with the Gender Studies lecturer.

At first I though geez I wouldn't like that comment in a lift either but thanks to Seamus for explaining. It completely changes the context of the comment which was basically a light hearted harmless joke. However I think he was very unwise to write that letter to her. What he said in it was never going to cool the temperature, only rile her more, and make himself look like he was harassing her, not the cleverest thing to do when you are under investigation.

In the lift he should have said: "Ladies' lingerie. They have a sale on. Knickers are down."

Then she might have seen the fanny side.
